I am currently in Kathmandu after travelling continuously in Asia for three years, through twelve countries, collecting transparencys for a picture library and studying Asian religion.

While in India recently I stopped off for three months in Varinessi where I wrote my manuscript, the story of a woman who is sidetracked during a business trip by a strange encounter which causes her to question her existence after considering the nature of her mind and the life it manifests. It’s set in the countries in which I now live and centers around the practical experience of Asian philosophy, which I have now studied for most of my life (I am Eurasian). In parts it’s humorous, especially concerning one character, but principally it describes the narrator’s inner questioning in the light of her family’s demise.

The story of this manuscript and my travels has recently been featured in my local paper. Also, in Perth last year I worked as a journalist for ‘Nova’, Western Australia’s largest selling _alternative newspaper_. These cuttings would be included with the script.

If you are interested to see either the full script, or sample chapters and a synopsis, then any letter addressed to me in the provided envelope would be answered by my brother, who will send your requirements and an S.A.E. on request.

Thank you for contacting us. We are sorry to say that your proposal does not fit in with our publishing programme for the foreseeable future. We are a small imprint, with limited resources, and have to be very selective about what we take on. Some additional considerations, if appropriate, are ringed as follows:

– We think your book might be commercially viable, but that you would be better off being published by another, perhaps larger publisher.

– Your book would be relatively expensive to produce, hence correspondingly difficult to make profitable.

– We are not optimistic that your book, in the present climate, is likely to find a commercial publisher.

We always advise authors against ‘vanity’ or ‘subsidy’ publishing. Self-publishing (where the author takes the initiative, and establishes his or her own imprint) can often be viable for non-fiction. It works best when the subject is very specific, the market easily targeted, and the author/publisher is both expert in the field and highly motivated to publish and sell. For fiction, self-publishing is seldom advisable, and it should never be undertaken by someone who cannot afford to risk making a loss. If a time should come when, having considered the pros and cons, you resolve to self-publish, then Black Ace Editorial (address as above) can probably help you. Since we are in business to make a profit, however small, and we are concerned with the quality of the books with which we are involved, we have decided to concentrate our resources on first-class non-fiction.

Please forgive me for sending you a form letter in response, but I receive hundreds of book, film, tv and radio scripts each year, and there is only one of me.

I’m afraid I have decided not to accept your proposal. This does not necessarily mean that it is unsellable. All it means is that I do not think I can sell it – or that it does not make commercial sense from the agent’s (10%) perspective.

Having said which, I feel I ought to make a few general points, which you may or may not find helpful:

1) From the hundreds of people of all kinds who write to me each year, I probably take on 2-4 new clients. (For most major publishers, broadcast and film companies, the figures for unsolicited manuscripts are even worse: between zero and two out of literally thousands. Indeed, increasing numbers of them will only look at submissions made through established agents.)

2) Having said which, however, the overwhelming majority (over 95%) of submissions are so hopelessly bad that one shouldn’t really include them in any ‘significant’ statistics.

3) Last year over 100,000 new titles (fiction and non-fiction and including new editions of previously published works) were published.

That there is a vast amount of undiscovered talent out there is a delusion. If you have genuine ability, persist; the real odds are less fearsome than they might at first appear.

You do have a pleasing writing style and the story does have something but a publisher is going to look for a pretty strong connection with this country: the market tends towards _circled: the xenophobic_ and there is little interest in books set entirely out of this country – unless the writer is established and the book has guaranteed sales before it hits the shelves.

At the risk of ‘teaching my grandmother to suck eggs’, may I respectfully suggest that you double check in the bumper Export Edition of the _Bookseller_ in your local reference library precisely who are the major publishers in your field* now; call them to obtain the name of the editor in charge of the relevant list (large companies are very compartmentalized); and then send a synopsis or book cover blurb** together with sample chapters plus a letter outlining who you are (previous experience, etc) and precisely the readership you are aiming at (it may help to cite a similar book already successfully published). Nowadays it is perfectly acceptable to approach several publishers at once and even several imprints within the same group. Details of literary agents can be found, amongst other vital information, in _The Writer’s and Artist’s Yearbook_ from bookshops or libraries.

Due to pressure of submissions, I regret that we do not have the resources to reply individually to each correspondent or to provide constructive criticism.

I am writing to enquire if it would be possible for you to consider my [circled: 64,000] word novel ‘Aphania’ for publication.

I am currently in Kathmandu after travelling continuously in Asia for three years, through twelve countries, collecting transparencys for a picture library and studying Asian religion.

While in India recently I stopped off for three months in Varinasai where I wrote my manuscript, the story of a woman who is sidetracked during a business trip by a strange encounter which causes her to question her existence after considering the nature of her mind and the life it manifests. It’s set in the countries in which I now live and centers around the practical experience of Asian philosophy, which I have now studied for most of my life (I am Eurasian). In parts it’s humorous, especially concerning one character, but principally it describes the narrator’s inner questioning in the light of her family’s demise.

The story of this manuscript and my travels has recently been featured in my local paper. Also, in Perth last year I worked as a journalist for ‘Nova’, Western Australia’s largest selling alternative newspaper. These cuttings would be included with the script.

I hope you are able to consider my work and will look forward to your reply.

I am writing to inquire if Tartarus Press might consider publishing my third novel: Ambrosia? I’m enclosing a brief outline and, as you will see, it’s really about our desire for happiness – as are all novels essentially, though not quite as mine.

Yesterday I used the on-line book company Amazon to search the key word “happiness” and it returned with 1475 hits. Titles included: The Art of Happiness; Absolute Happiness etc, and many were bestsellers. They were all non-fiction, but I think people buy novels in the line of what resonates with or mirrors their lives. Every life is about searching for happiness and each of us ponders questions concerning it. All people look within and without for it and everything we ever plan or do is towards that end in some way. As finding contentment concerns us all then I’m guessing the potential readership may be large.

In certain respects Ambrosia? reminds me of two well-known books. Although my work doesn’t cover classical ideas like Sophie’s world, nor does it read as a fairytale, it does have a similar light feel and accessibility. Also Zen and the Art of Motorcycle maintenance comes to mind, though I think my project flows easily from start to finish as the ideas/speculations are woven into the fictional plot rather than explained in-between true-life reminiscences. Ambrosia? also has a humorous side, and over the course of the story the reader watches as two very different characters reverse their personalities due to their changing perception of what happiness is, and where.

I’m 28 and have been writing for ten years. In England, I had two offers to publish psychology/self-improvement non-fiction, but one was dropped due to (my) poor photography, the other when the list was cut. I returned to college to pass in English and photography, then shortly after left the country.

I traveled Asia researching religion and meditation, then went to Perth where I worked for Nova, western Australia’s largest selling alternative newspaper, where I covered New Age/psychology articles to a different theme each month. I returned to Asia and completed two novels, which were difficult to submit due to distance and an errant U.K. business center.

These problems are now solved as I work entirely on computers and handle my own correspondence. After writing Ambrosia? I spent a considerable time reading the techniques of fiction – then completely rewrote it. Now it’s the first thing I’m truly happy with… hence I need a publisher.

I intend to raise interest in my work by being very accessible via the Internet. I’m currently working on a web page concerning the ideas contained in my book and also their further

At the risk of ‘teaching my grandmother to suck eggs’, may I respectfully suggest that you double check in the bumper Export Edition of the _Bookseller_ in your local reference library precisely who are the major publishers in your field*now; call them to obtain the name of the editor in charge of the relevant list (large companies are very compartmentalized); and then send a synopsis or book cover blurb together with sample chapters plus a letter outlining who you are (previous experience, etc) and precisely the readership you are aiming at (it may help to cite a similar book already successfully published). Nowadays it is perfectly acceptable to approach several publishers at once and even several imprints within the same group. Details of literary agents can be found, amongst other vital information, in _The Writer’s and Artist’s Yearbook_ from bookshops or libraries.

Due to pressure of submissions, I regret that we do not have the resources to reply individually to each correspondent or to provide constructive criticism.

For non-subsidised publishing please forward manuscripts either by your agent or mark clearly on your manuscript. Our subsidised publishing is a co-operation between the Author and the Publisher wherein both contribute and then share in the benefits. Although a financial subsidy to cover the origination costs is required from the Author, which can be paid in interest-free instalments, no further monies are required. We undertake to print as many copies as the market requires, and to keep the book in print for as long as there is a demand for it. All reprints are undertaken at our expense.

In the increasingly accountant-driven world of publishing, the large multinational groups who dominate worldwide seldom accept works from new Authors, thus the service which we offer is often the only way that they can realistically expect to see their work in print.

If your manuscript is found to be acceptable, we will provide a completely personal service, planning and seeing your book through all the various facets of production. One of our team of skilled copy editors will be assigned to your book. The edited manuscript will then be sent to you for your approval. When it is returned it will be typeset, proofread and the proofs sent to you for final checking. Meanwhile one of our artists will, in consultation with yourself, design a suitable cover or dustjacket. The average time for completing a book is nine months.

We attend to all copyright and standard book numbering details and copies are lodged with the British Library, the University Libraries of Oxford and Cambridge, the National Libraries of Scotland and Wales and the Library of Trinity College Dublin.

Even before your book is printed our marketing department will prepare information which is sent to key accounts, wholesalers and library suppliers. After publication, details and review copies are sent to the local and national media and to specialist magazines and journals. We have been instrumental in getting many of our authors interviews on radio and even in some cases on television.

Details are also sent to our overseas sales agents in Europe and the Middle East; the United States and Canada; South Africa and Zimbabwe; Australia and New Zealand; and Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei, where agents are in place.

You will receive a royalty of 30 per cent on all sales of your book, excluding author purchases, which is more than treble the rate paid by most publishers, until your entire investment is recouped, and thereafter 20 per cent. In addition, you will receive 50 per cent of all subsidiary rights that we may negotiate on your behalf. Royalties are paid every six months. We are aware that there are some publishers who offer royalties as high as 50 per cent on sales. We ask you to consider the facts. Nowadays retailers and wholesalers are demanding ever higher discounts. If they are to seriously consider stocking our titles we have to comply with their demands. The figures therefore do not add up. Always remember, 100 per cent of nothing is nothing. However, we should point out that book publication is a competitive business and there can be no guarantees that you will recoup all of your investment.

Once we have received our reader’s report, we will be able to make firm and detailed proposals if we feel that this is a title we would wish to publish.

Finally, no letter can answer all the questions an Author may wish to ask a publisher. Nor can it detail the precise relationship between Author and Publisher – your book has a unique identity, after all. Equally, Janus has a unique identity as a Publisher. We believe that, if your book has commercial possibilities, it stands the greatest chance of success in a very crowded publishing industry with Janus Publishing Company.

It’s me, J., in India. I didn”t have time to write from Kathmandu and there was less news then. Happily there are three places near where I live with computers, I see them all over so we should be able to keep in touch. This is the first e-mail I’ve sent so let me know you’ve received it.

Right, to confirm what I recently explained on the phone. Each submission of the manuscript is thus :-

1 – Title page.

2 – Prologue.

3 – Introduction.

4 – Chapter one, two, three, four.

5 – The Synopsis.

The whole thinng double-spaced with good margins. One side of the paper only. Unbound loose sheets in a non-fancy folder. The cover letter saying very briefly that you’re enclosing as per requested and the rest is availible.

M. said you requested to see the letter I sent out. I’ll do my best to forward it at some point, the thing is that I’m carrying it on a floppy and I don’t know how to put it in a mail programme. When I find our you’ll see it.

M. also said you wanted a photo and C.V. I keep putting off writing a C.V. because I don’t know how to explain my unconventional life, however, I’ve got some ideas for that now and could conclude it with a kind of mission statement. I’ll do my best to send it in ’99. As for the photograph – No Way. You’ll have to cut a picture out a body-building magazine and tell them it’s me.

One important thing is to make sure that only my Aunt’s address is used and that all correspondence originals remain there. Basically, on a C.V. or tax record or whatever, my whole life is a blank and all my

orrespondence going back ten years proves I’m a consistantly producing,

Just to confirm, when you’ve printed a copy of the manuscript out the printer – subsequent duplicates are photocopied to save money, yeah? It’s just that when I have to pay for the print-outs here it’s so damned expensive.

I think that’s all I wanted to say. M. said you liked the work and the agent response is the best yet. This is the one! Again, let me know you received this. Thanks for the help. Happy New Year.

_RE: SUBMISSION QUERY._

I am writing to enquire if you could consider representing my third novel _Ambrosia?_ I’m 27 and have been writing for 10 years. In England I had some interest shown in my non-fiction but it was let down by poor photography, and a full acceptance was then dropped when the list was cut. I returned to college to pass in English and photography, then left the country.
I lived in Australia writing for _Nova_, Western Australia’s largest alternative newspaper, then onto Asia where I completed two novels, which were difficult to submit due to the distance. I wrote _Ambrosia?_ last year, then spent a considerable time reading the techniques of fiction – and completely rewrote it. Now it’s the first thing I’m truly happy with… hence I need an agent. Also I’ve now found a business centre in England which can submit it for me.

I’m enclosing a brief plot outline of my 70,000 word project, which I think would sell because it’s really about the search for happiness – as are all plots, essentially. Yesterday I used the on-line book company _Amazon_ to search the key-word: ‘Happiness’, and it came back with 1388 hits. Titles included: The Art of Happiness; Absolute Happiness ect. And many were bestsellers.They were all non-fiction, but I think people buy fiction in the line of what interests them or mirrors their lives, and as finding contentment concerns us all I’m guessing the potential readership may be large.
My book reminds me of _Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance_ in the way it shifts between plot and ideas, though in _Ambrosia?_ the latter is through the narrator’s soul-searching, so the flow isn’t disjointed as the answers emerge.

I’ve been an avid diarist since I was 15 and write almost exclusively about my own ideas and experiences at self-improvement, psychology – even religion in a way and hence my fascination with Asia. Those journals contain so many of my own cogitations, new ideas that work and can become fiction and non-fiction.
I’m just becoming interested again in computers and plan to work all of my original material into an interactive web-page. I’d publicise it with reciprocal links to related pages and press releases, perhaps one-way links to electronic publishers that carry my own books. Having said which, I feel I ought to make a few general points, which you may or may not find helpful:

2) However, the overwhelming majority (over 95%) of submissions are so hopelessly bad that one shouldn’t really include them in any ‘significant’ statistics.

3) Last year over 100,000 new titles (fiction and non-fiction and including new editions of previously published works) were published.

That there is a vast amount of undiscovered talent out there is a delusion. If you have genuine ability, persist; the real odds are less fearsome than they might at first appear.

I’m enclosing a brief plot outline of my 70,000 word project, which I think would sell because it’s really about the search for happiness – as are all plots, essentially. Yesterday I used the on-line book company _Amazon_ to search the key-word: ‘Happiness’, and it came back with 1388 hits. Titles included: The Art of Happiness, Absolute Happiness ect. And many were bestsellers. They were all non-fiction, but I think people buy fiction in the line of what interests them or mirrors their lives, and as finding contentment concerns us all I’m guessing the potential readership may be large.
My book reminds me of _Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance_ in the way it shifts between plot and ideas, though in _Ambrosia?_ the latter is through the narrator’s soul-searching, so the flow isn’t disjointed as the answers emerge.

I am writing to enquire if you could consider representing my third novel _Ambrosia_? I’m 27 and have been writing for 10 years. In England I had some interest shown in my non-fiction but it was let down by poor photography, and a full acceptance was then dropped when the list was cut. I returned to college to pass in English and photography, then left the country.
I lived in Australia writing for _Nova_, Western Australia’s largest alternative newspaper, then onto Asia where I completed two novels, which were difficult to submit due to the distance. I wrote _Ambrosia_? last year, then spent a considerable time reading the techniques of fiction – and completely rewrote it. Now it’s the first thing I’m truly happy with… hence I need an agent. Also I’ve now found a business centre in England which can submit it for me.
