I’m afraid that the Polygon fiction list is full at the moment.

I apologise for the standard nature of the letter but we receive around 20 typescripts/ideas a week and, unfortunately, don’t have the resources to send out an individual letter to each person. The work has been read and assessed for its suitability for our house: rejection at this stage does not imply that the work is not suitable for publication elsewhere. We are a small imprint, with limited resources, and have to be very selective about what we take on. Some additional considerations, if appropriate, are ringed as follows:

– We think your book might be commercially viable, but that you would be better off being published by another, perhaps larger publisher.

– Your book would be relatively expensive to produce, hence correspondingly difficult to make profitable.

We always advise authors against ‘vanity’ or ‘subsidy’ publishing. Self-publishing (where the author takes the initiative, and establishes his or her own imprint) can often be viable for non-fiction. It works best when the subject is very specific, the market easily targeted, and the author/publisher is both expert in the field and highly motivated to publish and sell. For fiction, self-publishing is seldom advisable, and it should never be undertaken by someone who cannot afford to risk making a loss. Unfortunately, our list is full for the coming eighteen months and we have reluctantly come to the conclusion that we could not publish your proposed book with commercial success.

At the risk of ‘teaching my grandmother to suck eggs’, may I respectfully suggest that you double check in the bumper Export Edition of the _Bookseller_ in your local reference library precisely who are the major publishers in your field* now; call them to obtain the name of the editor in charge of the relevant list (large companies are very compartmentalized); and then send a synopsis or book cover blurb** together with sample chapters plus a letter outlining who you are (previous experience, etc) and precisely the readership you are aiming at (it may help to cite a similar book already successfully published). Nowadays it is perfectly acceptable to approach several publishers at once and even several imprints within the same group. Details of literary agents can be found, amongst other vital information, in _The Writer’s and Artist’s Yearbook_ from bookshops or libraries.

Due to pressure of submissions, I regret that we do not have the resources to reply individually to each correspondent or to provide constructive criticism.

[handwritten: NOTE: you may not get back the jiffy bag/envelope in which you send the material, so don’t send a new, expensive one. Try to keep the initial submission a cheap procedure.]
We are only able to consider typed mss, and not handwritten ones. Double line spacing, on one side of the page only, is ideal. Bulky files which take up our limited shelf-space, and elaborate packaging are undesirable. Nor can we consider material that is sent in on disk.

I am writing to enquire if it would be possible for you to consider my [circled: 64,000 word novel ‘Aphasia’] for publication.

I am currently in Kathmandu after travelling continuously in Asia for three years, through twelve countries, collecting transparencys for a picture library and studying Asian religion.

While in India recently I stopped off for three months in Varinessi where I wrote my manuscript, the story of a woman who is sidetracked during a business trip by a strange encounter which causes her to question her existence after considering the nature of her mind and the life it manifests. It’s set in the countries in which I now live and centers around the practical experience of Asian philosophy, which I have now studied for most of my life (I am Eurasian). In parts it’s humorous, especially concerning one character, but principally it describes the narrator’s inner questioning in the light of her family’s demise.

The story of this manuscript and my travels has recently been featured in my local paper. Also, in Perth last year I worked as a journalist for ‘Nova’, Western Australia’s largest selling alternative newspaper. These cuttings would be included with the script.

If you are interested to see either the full script, or sample chapters and a synopsis, then any letter addressed to me in the provided envelope would be answered by my brother, who will send your requirements and an S.A.E. on request.

At the risk of ‘teaching my grandmother to suck eggs’, may I respectfully suggest that you double check in the bumper Export Edition of the _Bookseller_ in your local reference library precisely who are the major publishers in your field* [inserted above: now]; call them to obtain the name of the editor in charge of the relevant list (large companies are very compartmentalized); and then send a synopsis or book cover blurb** together with sample chapters plus a letter outlining who you are (previous experience, etc) and precisely the readership you are aiming at (it may help to cite a similar book already successfully published). Nowadays it is perfectly acceptable to approach several publishers at once and even several imprints within the same group. Details of literary agents can be found, amongst other vital information, in _The Writer’s and Artist’s Yearbook_ from bookshops or libraries.

Due to pressure of submissions, I regret that we do not have the resources to reply individually to each correspondent or to provide constructive criticism.

Since we are in business to make a profit, however small, and we are concerned with the quality of the books with which we are involved, we have decided to concentrate our resources on first-class non-fiction.

I am writing to enquire if it would be possible for you to consider my 64,000 word novel ‘Aphasia’ for publication.

I am currently in Kathmandu after travelling continuously in Asia for three years, through twelve countries, collecting transparencys for a picture library and studying Asian religion.

While in India recently I stopped off for three months in Varinessi where I wrote my manuscript, the story of a woman who is sidetracked during a business trip by a strange encounter which causes her to question her existence after considering the nature of her mind and the life it manifests. It’s set in the countries in which I now live and centers around the practical experience of Asian philosophy, which I have now studied for most of my life (I am Eurasian). In parts it’s humorous, especially concerning one character, but principally it describes the narrator’s inner questioning in the light of her family’s demise.

The story of this manuscript and my travels has recently been featured in my local paper. Also, in Perth last year I worked as a journalist for ‘Nova’, Western Australia’s largest selling _alternative newspaper_. These cuttings would be included with the script.

If you are interested to see either the full script, or sample chapters and a synopsis, then any letter addressed to me in the provided envelope would be answered by my brother, who will send your requirements and an S.A.E. on request.

How are you? I’ve made it back here and am now in the same place where I wrote you that letter describing ‘Steps to Approach Geoff Hamilton’ which ofcourse you did!
I got down alright. I was rushed to get things sent off the post office and didn’t really make it, I’ve still got some things with me so I’ll have to try and get them off from here, the thing is that as I remember at the G.P.O. here they’ve got this scam going where they send everything as a registered letter to save money, then split the difference with you. I’d really rather not do that because stuff might not arrive. But that’s the scam. If you ask to send it the standard way, then they quote you a silly price to force you into the corruption.
It’s a shame I couldn’t get one last go on the computer before I left. I didn’t have time. I really didn’t expect to get my Indian Visa. I didn’t put the telex in until Dec 1st. They telex the Indian Mission in London and they keep a record to check that each visa you apply for has a space of six months inbetween it (each visa). Well the strange thing is that they take hundreds of fees (£3) but the mission only ever sends back a few answers. Most people wait seven days, it doesn’t come so they write a note ‘NO ANSWER – RESEND’, then give you the visa anyhow! The same day. It’s absurd really because I’ve had a visa within the last few (six) months but I’ve got a new passport number so they won’t have any record of it. Anyway it takes seven days, I already had a flight so I turned up and asked if I could have it anyway and they said yes. There was

a Buddist Nun in the line before me. She’d had visa’s from all over, including Mingolia! She thinks they take all these telex fees every day, but then only send a few and pocket the money. That’s why they give out visa’s anyway. They do all this to stop people working illegally but how many people do you see working in India! In a place like Thailand where it’s easy to work, it’s easy to get the visa!
Well anyway, I didn’t get a last go on the computer because I was leaving it for when the visa didn’t come. The Tibetan saved my letter on disk for me. This letter, well, fifty I sent off on December 3rd is much better than anything before I really sold it. I don’t know if you recall me telling you on the phone, anyhow, to help prove theres a market for my book I clicked into the electronic publisher Amazon. When you buy a book from them you type in a keyword your looking for, like a title, authors name or maybe just a general subject word. Well, my novel is about ‘the pursuit of happiness’, so I typed in _happiness_ and it had 1388 books in its database with that word in the titles. With my letter I simply photocopied it and enclosed the first page to prove there would be interest for my book. I’m enclosing the whole thing so you can see it. Also I wrote a page of blurb and in the letter my plans, amongst other things, to make a web page that ties in with the book and links to an electronic publisher that carries my work. Yeah, this one is looking a whole lot better. Ofcourse Geoff H. once told me not to send anything just before Christmas but I didn’t really have any choice

did I. This is the most letters I’ve sent at any one time, also the best concerning the last work so maybe……
While I’m here I’ll go through the script one last time and forward a final sheet of corrections for G.H. We should do the postcard idea you know, so everytime there’s a ‘hit’ then when the letter is forwarded to G.H. he could get a postcard to aknowledge receipt to Anne’s house so, together with the ‘Submission table’ I’ve sent Anne, at any time we’d know exactly who hadn’t replied to the letter, who said no, who said yes, who has the script and if anyone is waiting for anything in the post. Yes, good idea. All we need to do is keep the submissions table up-to-date. Did Anne understand those cards I sent her?
Ofcourse, as I didn’t use the computer, I didn’t get a chance to check out the financial services, which is sad. I’ve got the article with me. I’ll have to get it copied. Obviously there’s no computers around me now, even in the bank, but maybe it took off in Goa. I think everythings held back by import restrictions. It’s O.K. I suppose. It’s a complicated thing, economics, so I have a load of notes with me that I’ll write up before I leave, and I should be able to get a decent book in Delhi to further it, so I can see now as preperation. Even if I can’t get to a computer, I should at least be able to get to financial journals. I did have a dream telling me not to get too obsessed/addicted to it so maybe it’s good I’m away now.
I’m well, travelling I mean. I got here well, and I’m still carrying my sketchbook ect. so when I leave I’ll be going lighter still. I’ll look for a book about

painting so I dare say I’ll get laden down in Delhi, but then it’s only really a train ride so I should be O.K. I’ve written to ‘Haccienda’ so they know I’m coming.
I swapped all my books for really small ‘Shambala Pocket Classics’ about religion, so I consider now my religious retreat, like as a constant thing.
I’m staying in the government place again, mainly because it’s the closest place to the station. They leave the lights turned on all day, and when I checked in the Manager said he’ll give me the room for two nights but then might have to ask me to leave if he books it! If I have to leave here it’ll be the fourth time they’ve asked me to leave a government run place. There’s a mouse under my table and the waiter just asked me if I’d tip him 20 rupees. All the government places are the same, not only the management, but the menu is identical and even the building, furniture. The things that go wrong. This is central planning for you. Monolithic.
Anyway, this is my plan now.
(1) Finish the scrapbook.
(2) Final check the manuscript.
(3) Do the economic notes.
Then Delhi – Goa.
But I’ll definitely make Goa before Christmas. It should be interesting then, rather than the Ghost Town I recall. I guess the room will be expensive, but if they’ve kept my bag all this time I can just think of it as a storage fee.

How are you? I’m stuck by the lake and so must rely on the bookshop to post this for me. Hopefully you’ll get it.
I had checked in Hotel Singapore for three nights, but the staff were funny. I moved today. A big Spartan room, but ok for a time, just over two pounds.
I don’t think I’ll be able to use the Internet. There are lots of cybercafes, but they’re deserted. In 4 days I’ve seen two people using them. A price-fixing cartel makes the price about ten pounds an hour – as opposed to Delhi, which is fifteen pence! How can that make any sense? Taking something that costs fifteen pence in Delhi and fixing the price to make it ten pounds, and having empty cybercafes. I mean, they’re totally empty. See, they run businesses as stupidly as this, then ask the UN for aid as no one has any money.

You remember I told you the Indian government started charging for all the tourist sites $20 dollars for the Taj Mahal, 10 dollars for everything else. Well, when I saw everyone complaining on the Internet, what I didn’t understand was – people have to pay in FOREIGN CURRENCY! You actually have to give them a twenty dollar American note. Of course, you can’t buy those in India. So people are turning up from abroad with only traveller’s cheques not knowing, and there’s absolutely no way they can get to see anything.
I wonder if there’s anyone in Asia with one gram of business sense?
It’s getting cold now though and colder every day. At night I wear everything and am just about comfortable. Lets hope it doesn’t get any colder. All the restaurants have big fires going in the middle though.
I finished the book proposal. It wasn’t perfect, so I sent three. I just had a dream that two had been rejected and only one JUDY PIATKUS was still considering it. So it shall be interesting to see if that’s true.
Anyway, I’d better get on. As the Internet is unusable, I’ll return to the habit of letter-writing.

Yes, I’ve completely finished #3, and yesterday had it copied – and am today sending the original. It’s Sunday but everything stays open, Saturday is the closing day here. I’ve got it here in this restaurant right before me plus the packing material.
Right, so what to do. Firstly, I’m keeping the copy which actually looks alot better than the original – but I’m sending the original on the basis that a copy from a copy might lose quality. However, this original is over a year old so it’s yellowing a bit and _crossed out: losing_ losing density, so the most important thing is to get it copied, again in U.K. I mean. Now the pages I’ve done in Kathmandu are a year newer than the other ones, so they’re whiter, also the darkness of the ink differs according to ribbon changes, so at the copy-shop you might say this:-

O.K. So then you have your copy. So it has to go to Geoff. The manuscript is in 2 parts.
(1) The manuscript.
(2) The Synopsis.

The manuscript is numbered 1, 2, 3, 4 ect to the end. The Synopsis is numbered [circled: Synopsis One], [circled: Synopsis Two] ect. to the end.
The Synopsis starts with chapter Five, therefore it comes at the end of chapter Four, which happens to be page 80 in the original script. The synopsis is 28 pages long. So the amount of pages you’ll give to Geoff is.

Now, there’s a couple of points to bear in mind.
(1) To save pages (paper), and post, the manuscript is double-sided, except the last which came off the computer, however, what G.H. does and what agents end up seeing will be _crossed out: [unreadable]_ single sided, in accordance with the instructions I earlier tore out of books and sent you.
(2) As I did the synopsis here in Kathmandu, while trying out various places, I ended up using three different machines to do it – so it’s not uniform. For example, I mean, each paragraph starts with a star * but I couldn’t always line them up, not knowing how the machine works, so some of it might look like this:-

(3) A couple of pages of the synopsis are handwritten so I’ll keep the original copy until I know it’s O.K, then verify any ambiguity.

(4) I think it’s mostly O.K, however, in the script itself, the manuscript, there’s one fairly common mistake. The first paragraph of a chapter or/and the first paragraph after a transition isn’t indented. i.e. At the first chapter’s paragraph or at the first paragraph of a transition (gap) I’ve accidentally indented it and if you check a commercial novel, it isn’t meant to be like that. Where I’ve noticed the mistake, I’ve written in the margin – _No Indent_ but I haven’t written it everywhere.

(5) As the script’s in a bad way, the copy will probably look better than the original, so if/when you come to look at it, simply remove the synopsis, synopsis one, synopsis two – and then put the copy in order and that will be the easiest one to read.

That’s about it. I know that’s complicated, but I’ll explain it all by voice [phone] so it shall be clear. To begin with, I’ll write letters myself, so don’t worry about the marketing – though I won’t make a move until I know you have it.

No pills at G.P.O. so far, but I had a dream they were misfiled, and written in a big blue book, the one I checked last time was green, so I’ll try again today.

under instructions from your mother, I have recently prepared, both a synopsis and carefully prepared MS of the first five chapters of your novel. The MS is thus sent to publishing houses in a well presented format, so that their submissions editors can read your MS efficiently.
Thus far, nine publishing houses have replied in the negative. However, their comments are worth noting, and one such quote accompanies this fax. Currently we await replies from three publishers, who have your MS to-hand.
I have designed a letter head which provides the basic info required for the publishers. I hope, it meets with your approval. I think a 150-200 word “sales pitch” might improve things as well as a CV. A paper in Scotland has suggested a 1,000 worded article, as a regular feature on your travels and ongoing experiences.

After months of planning and secrecy, my husband Peter sprang the birthday surprise of a lifetime!

was all arranged. We had about 40 people who all said they’d come. Then, on the day, the snow began to fall really heavily. It actually lay six inches deep in our home town, Scarborough.
“We’ll have to cancel!” I cried to Peter, ringing the in-laws, who live in Manchester, my sister in Doncaster…
Unbeknown to me, Peter was secretly ringing them back, saying, “Please come!
Because everyone except me knew Peter had planned a wonderful surprise.
He’d told me was that we’d be going somewhere nice for my birthday and had hinted I’d be treated like a queen.
“Ooh, maybe a weekend at a beauty farm, surrounded by mud packs, luxurious massages and even a few glasses for the wrinkles,” crossed my mind. “I’m doing 40 in style.”

I SPENT the whole day of the party worrying, and remember thinking, “Why is he doing this? No-one’s going to turn up in this weather.”
But turn up they all did, and I was rushing around making sure everyone had a drink, when Peter suddenly caught my attention.
“Right,” he announced.
Everyone turned and saw Peter was staring at me and smiling.
“What’s going on?” I asked.
“Well, Ida, do you remember I said you’re going to be treated like a queen? Well, I wasn’t joking, you’re going to be a queen for ten days. On your actual birthday you won’t be here

– you’ll be in Egypt!”
At that point someone carried in a birthday cake, its top decorated with a pyramid and a camel, and 13-year-old Oliver, our youngest son, produced the tickets.
If Cilla Black had walked in I wouldn’t have been surprised. It was as though someone had gone whoosh and swept me off my feet. Egypt – I just couldn’t take it in.

Later, Peter told me he had been planning this holiday as a birthday gift for me since last

A dream come true

July, when we’d had a family holiday to France with Daniel, Oliver and Andrew, who’s 17.
He’d taken most people into his confidence – my parents and my family knew, the children knew, even the staff at the respite care home where I take Daniel knew!

and Peter thought that, with him spending more time at home, there would be a lot more pressure on me.
The next few years were going to be so uncertain – now was the right time for us to have a holiday.

PETER did really well to keep his surprise from me because after 22 years of marriage we’re really close. He was so relieved not to have to keep it a secret any longer – now he just had to answer my million and one questions about where, when and how!
And I had to decide what to pack, because we were due to set off ten days later.

Flight to Luxor
On January 12, we flew to Luxor, took a week’s cruise on the Ra 2, then sailed to Aswan and back.
We flew to Cairo to see the Pyramids, the temples and the museums, staying at the Hilton

hotel, which was amazing.
It was so hot, I was sunbathing on my birthday!
It was totally relaxing, and when I came back everyone said how wonderful I looked. Actually, my feet still haven’t touched the ground! Peter and I still talk about it and how much good it did us.
It was the best thing Peter could have done for me – it was like being on honeymoon.
We’ve been a family for twenty years and have always put the children first, but while we were on holiday we became individuals again.
We knew that when we got back we would become Mum and Dad again, so we made the most of it.
We spent 24 hours a day together and never exchanged a cross word! Peter is totally remarkable and I’m not just saying that because he’s my husband.
Nothing can top what he did for me. I couldn’t have been treated to a better holiday. It gave me a real boost.
My tan has faded, but the memory will always be there.

NO ESCAPE!

began half-heartedly, but he was not put off.
Ernest strode outside and Mum and Dorrie on his heels. He grabbed the axe that was leaning out of the wood shed and made off down the garden, then went straight up to Harry and raised the axe.
“Harry, look out!” I screamed.
Harry squawked and took off.
Round and round the garden he went, followed by Ernest with the axe raised above his head and a mad glint in his eye.
I grabbed Dorrie’s arm.
“Is that what you’re marrying?” I squealed. “He’s nothing but an axe murderer!”
Dorrie flapped her hands. “Ernest, stop it!”
But Ernest was enjoying himself. Round and round he went, taking out at poor Harry with the axe.
Harry kept right on squawking and running, flapping his wings.
Then a kind of blur went past me. A blur with thick dark hair and a baggy sweater. With one hand, Liam grabbed Ernest’s arm, with the other, he snatched the axe and threw it on the lawn.
“Shame on you!” Liam yelled. “Tormenting a poor dumb animal.”
Ernest was red with fury. “It takes one to know one!” he jeered.
That was a mistake. Liam walked over to the woodpile, replaced the axe, then walked briskly back to Ernest and punched him, hard. Ernest sat down, dazed.
“Liam’s right,” Dorrie said. “Shame on you!”
Ernest threw her a baleful look, and she turned on her heel, following Liam up to the house.

Mum and I helped Ernest to his feet. We could hear Liam and Dorrie shouting at each other in the passage.
“Dad thinks hard-boiled eggs are nice,” I said, trying not to look at Ernest.
“Come into the house, Ernest,” Mum said, ignoring me. “I’ll get you a cold wet cloth.”
“Please don’t trouble!” Ernest said angrily. He dusted himself down, marched back into the house, pushed past Liam and Dorrie in the passage and disappeared through the front door.
Mum and I went into the kitchen. Liam and Dorrie had stopped shouting at each other. Everything was very quiet.
After a while, Dorrie poked her head round the door. Liam was behind her and there was a bright red lipstick mark on his cheek.
“Liam and I are going for a walk in the park, Mum,” Dorrie said.
“Don’t forget to put on your nice shirt and sports jacket, Liam,” I called.
There was no answer, but the front door clicked shut. Mum and I hurried to the sitting-room window.
Mum sighed and untied her apron. “He’s a very handsome man,” she murmured. “Dorrie could do a lot worse.”
In the end, there was no engagement party, just a wedding.
Liam kissed me on the cheek and said I was a grand girl, and he danced a waltz with Mum as Dad looked on, beaming.
While everyone was having a great time and munching on hard-boiled egg sandwiches and cheese straws, I took Harry a big bowl of scraps.
It seemed the very least I could do.

THE BOY WHO WOULDN’T GIVE UP
Seventeen-year-old Keith Alexander might have been born with just one arm but it hasn’t stopped him from learning to play the guitar like a professional!

WHO says you can’t play guitar with just one arm? Certainly not one plucky teenager from Shropshire!
Born with one arm, Keith Alexander has proved his mum and four brothers, his school and his friends wrong by learning to play the instrument of his dreams.
What’s more, the 17-year-old plays so well that he aims to turn professional with a band of his own.
With no right arm below his elbow, Keith uses a mechanical artificial arm with a gripping hook to play the guitar. The inventive teenager simply wedges a plectrum into the hook and secures it with an elastic band!
“I started playing seriously about two years ago, after I had a bad accident,” Keith told me.
“I was climbing over a fence to retrieve a football when I slipped and fell six feet on to a post.
“I sustained lots of internal injuries. My spleen and my liver were badly damaged and a lung had collapsed.”

Personal goal
However, after nine days in hospital, Keith was home – and getting bored!
“I’d only ever messed about with my brother’s guitar before, but now I decided to teach myself to play properly.”
Having already seen her son come to terms with being disabled, losing his dad when he was just seven and now suffering a terrible accident, Keith’s mum, Valerie, hoped to protect him from more heartache by gently trying to persuade him to abandon this latest personal goal.
“I told him I didn’t think it was something he would ever be able to do – but he proved me wrong, just as he’s done so many times before! I never thought he’d learn to skateboard or ride a bike, either, but he managed it – though he ended up black and blue with the effort. He won’t give up at anything!”

KEITH explained how he became interested in the guitar.
“I considered playing the trumpet, but my school wouldn’t allow me to pursue it, being sure I was on to a non-starter! So I started off with an acoustic guitar, then went on to Spanish guitar

electric guitar – which I prefer. I enjoy all sorts of music, especially blues and I also enjoy writing songs.”
He added: “What’s nice is that Keith’s able to play Spanish and electric with equal ease. I understand how hard it is to play when he has to use strings, as my own father, Ron, was a professional jazz pianist so I know obviously born with a natural talent.”

A real performer
Keith really enjoyed performing his first concert with his musician friends recently.
“I play in certain patients at the nearby Oak Limb Centre which supplies the artificial arm he needs as he grows.
“At the moment he’s testing a new, myo-electric one, operated by muscles in his chest, the first of its kind in this country.
“Although he’s currently looking for a new musician to play with, he’s keen to find other disabled people to form an all-disabled band. And he’s also looking for someone to sponsor him and his band.”
In the meantime, Keith has been accepted to perform on a music performing arts training scheme in Liverpool, having gained ten GCSEs at school. He excels at art, and he’s drawing a comic strip which he hopes to have published.
“I’m doing something I’m interested in, which I’ll always enjoy,” he says. “I’ll always have my music to fall back on if a professional career not work out.”
Keith hopes his story will help other disabled people, especially the youngsters he meets at the limb centre in Staffordshire, where he’s an inspiration to them all.
“I hope my story in My Weekly will show that if he’s determined, he’ll succeed,” he says.

He openly admits he will never be as fluid as his young protégé. “It’s his subconscious over-compensation with his left hand that’s given him that quality. I envy it.”
“It’s nice that although Lee comes to teach me, he says he can also learn a lot from me, too,” Keith said. “By listening to each other, we can learn new techniques.
“But I don’t know if it’s really true that Lee will never be as fluid as me!”
But there’s no note of doubt in Valerie’s concluding words.
“Keith really is quite something – no-one could help admiring his ability to cope.”

Using a thesaurus there were noticeable changes to be made in EVERY paragraph as demonstrated to the client at the premise. If implemented this would take hours to amend copy. Basic spelling mistakes were corrected and mssing names inserted as best possible. The MS indicates those amendments. As a person very familiar with both Hong Kong and Singapore I found the MS most interesting given my own relationship with a Malay-Chienese for five years. I would certainly buy the novel. Perhaps the use of ‘I’d’ ‘we’ve’ don’t, etc.might be changed to improve international reading. These OBS relate to three chapters only. No other chapters were read or studied given the time scale for reproduction.

RE: SUBMISSION QUERY.

I am writing to enquire if you could consider representing my third novel Ambrosia? I’m
27 and have been writing for 10 years. In England I had some interest shown in my non-
fiction but it was let down by poor photography, and a full acceptance was then dropped
when the list was cut. I returned to college to pass in English and photography, then left the
country.
I lived in Australia writing for Nova, Western Australia’s largest alternative newspaper,
then onto Asia where I completed two novels, which were difficult to submit due to the
distance. I wrote Ambrosia? last year, then spent a considerable time reading the
techniques of fiction – and completely rewrote it. Now it’s the first thing I’m truly happy
with… hence I need an agent. Also I’ve now found a business centre in England which can
submit it for me.

I’m enclosing a brief plot outline of my 70,000 word project, which I think would sell
because it’s really about the search for happiness – as are all plots, essentially. Yesterday I
used the on-line book company Amazon to search the key-word: ‘Happiness’, and it came
back with 1388 hits. Titles included: The Art of Happiness; Absolute Happiness ect. And
many were bestsellers. They were all non-fiction, but I think people buy fiction in the line of
what interests them or mirrors their lives, and as finding contentment concerns us all I’m
guessing the potential readership may be large.
My book reminds me of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance in the way it shifts
between plot and ideas, though in Ambrosia? the latter is through the narrator’s soul-
searching, so the flow isn’t disjointed as the answers emerge.

I’ve been an avid diarist since I was 15 and write almost exclusively about my own ideas
and experiences at self-improvement, psychology – even religion in a way and hence my
fascination with Asia. Those journals contain so many of my own cogitations, new ideas
that work and can become fiction and non-fiction.
I’m just becoming interested again in computers and plan to work all of my original
material into an interactive web-page. I’d publicise it with reciprocal links to related pages
and press releases, perhaps one-way links to electronic publishers that carry my own books.

Re: SUBMISSION OF SCRIPT.

Hello, How are you? I would imagine you are by now aware that the manuscript is finished and by the time you read this, hopefully on its way. I’m just writing this quick letter to explain about submissions and exactly what I’m sending.

I’m planning to send three scripts at the same time. An original for photocopying from, a duplicate bound in a ring binder for people to read, both those by air, then a second duplicate by surface incase the others should go missing. I don’t know what the quality of the photocopies is going to be like so you may have to use only the original, I think most copies have a density control which might help because even the original is in a poor state, you’ll just have to wait until they turn up so you can see what you think.

I’ll be writing letters from here on my new headed stationary, don’t worry, I’ll bother correcting mistakes on them. If they are interested to see the work they will ask for one of a few things:

1- Full manuscript. This means send everything unbound without clips, just loose sheets in the correct order with an stamped S.A.E.

2- Three chapters, then send the introduction, prologue, chapter one, two and three with the synopsis which will be included with the master copy.

3- Synopsis and sample pages. Then send the synopsis and the sample pages which I will specify on the page before the synopsis in the master copy.

Remember whatever’s sent has to have return postage, but that can be second class. I think I’ll explain fully on the telephone to check you understand. I know it’s not easy being an avacardo.

I also know you’ve never read a book before, though would like to think that you are practicing on Thomas’s cloth books. I’d like to think the first full lenth novel you ever read is mine. At least I would have done some good then. If you find some of the words difficult you could ask Thomas to help you.

Do you like the notepaper. They did it so the watermark is the wrong way round. I’m hoping noone will notice. I’m going to try and interest the national papers in my story but I don’t think there’s much chance, so don’t worry if you suddenly get a load of rejection letters from the tabloids because I was just going for the long shot.

Apart from that all is well, oh yer, I was going to talk about agents. If I could get one it would be gr8t because they then do all the submissions, but they don’t like taking on unknown writers. I’m going to try them anyway but the easiest way is to get accepted by a publisher, then offer them the contract to vet, which means they get 15% for the minimum of work but then you are on their books so if I should get something offered [unreadable]

After taking care of her agoraphobic son for three years Josie realised her dreams by reuniting with him during his round-the-world trip, in India!

Who says you can’t overcome insurmountable odds to live your dreams? Certainly not one determined young man from .

J. first started having problems as a teenager at school. It began with problems sleeping at night and mild withdrawal symptoms. Within a year he’d stopped going out completely and couldn’t even bear to have the curtains open. J.’s mum, Josie, was at a loss.

“I didn’t really know how to help. Medication suppressed the symptoms slightly and I did my best to get him out. It was really difficult while I had my own business to run”.

The condition culminated in hospital with J. being treated for a suicide attempt. He recalls, “I was in China once and I heard the saying: one reaches the bottom of a pit before one can climb out. It was after that I started to pull myself together.

Inspired By a Dream.

J. had always loved two things, Asia and art.

“I remember at primary school I used to pretend I could write Chinese characters before I could write English! I always did projects about oriental countries and dreamed one day of living abroad.

During his confinement J. wrote a number of books which he tried to get published, he also read constantly.

“I used mail order to get just about every book about psychology I could find. When my dream to work as a writer abroad finally consumed me I began to apply what I had learnt.”

J. had discovered ‘exposure therapy’, or conquering irrational fear by facing it in small stages.

“You can imagine it took a long time considering the first step for me was learning to bear having the windows uncovered.”

However, J. persevered was eventually well enough to begin a job working for Oxfam in a charity shop. “It was really hard. I remember my first day working. I was so scared I rung up all the wrong amounts. Every time I wanted to run home I would read the second-hand ‘National Geographic’ magazines we sold and dream about my goal.”

Once his confidence began to return J. went back to college to complete his education, passing in English and photography. Josie recalls, “I was so proud when he showed me the certificates, I couldn’t believed how he’d changed. He’d never told me his dream was to live abroad. I knew he read travel books alot, I thought he was just interested in Asia, but one day…

Bombshell.

“We used to meet in a cafe every Wednesday to exchange news and gossip. It was Febuary 1993. He’d declined a gift the previous Christmas, saying he may need money soon and would tell me about it ‘if it worked out’ but on this particular day I was drinking coffee and he said out the blue: ‘I’ve done it, I’m emigrating’ and produced a passport with visa, a certificate from a teacher training college to teach second language that I didn’t even know he’d been attending and a one way Quantus air ticket to Thailand. I’m surprised I didn’t choke. The problem was he only told me four days before he was leaving.”

“I don’t know who was more shocked, mum or me. I’d planned the whole thing as well as I could. I even had some addresses in Thailand where I might find teaching work. Mum hit panic botton and rushed round buying me things she thought I might need. At one point I was worried she might even try and come with me!”

The long climb up culminated in an emotional parting at Heathrow airport. “I’d wanted to make my own way down on the train but there’s no way mum would have let me. Her last words to me were ‘phone as soon as you get there'”.

The next ten days were the worst as there was no communication at all. Eventually

the phone rang and J. left his hotel’s number.

“I didn’t know what his situation would be. A part of me wanted him to come back but I mostly wanted him to make it and be happy. I couldn’t believe what he told me on the phone. He’d made it, found a job and was living with a friend he’d met.

J. only stayed in Thailand until his visa expired, since then he’s travelled on through twelve countries, including Australia where he worked as a journalist for a newspaper.

Last year in India he stopped off for six months where he wrote his first novel. unknown to him Josie had already planned a trip to Goa, South India.

“It was perfect really. It was only a train trip away and I had a completed novel to show her.”

The plane trip over was badly delayed but at last they were reunited for the first time in over three years for a fortnight. “It was great to have a chance to spoil him. I know he always lives simply and scrapes by. Then he ate steaks in my hotel and I replaced all his clothes.”

Since then both mother and son have been busy. Josie has bought another pub in addition to the one she already owns, while her son has been working on his next project.

J. is also an accomplished photographer and has hundreds of pictures of Asia and Australia which he hopes to eventually sell to a picture library.

If that’s not enough he also paints and intends ti illustrate and produce covers for all his own works.

The Future.

“It’s so funny, I used to be unable to think past my front door, now there’s no limits to my dreams. I’d like to see my works published andin the long term use the profits to obtain a residence visa for a country I like. I’ll possibly buy into technology to start my own publishing company”.

As for Josie, “I often miss him as I work under the grey skies here, but now

I’ve seen him in Asia I worry less because I see him as he is rather than as he was so I know he is capable. Also, we’re going to meet again this year so I have something to look forward to. I’m happy as long as he is, where ever on the globe that may be: He’s a real inspiration, proof that anything can be overcome.”
