visible — the system of co-ordinates, and this geometrical system had a horizontal wavy line: the Sinus line, and a vertical line: the tangent line, distinctive from each other along both lines — as if they were railway tracks — two small freight waggons were running. One of them was going from left for right, on the Sinus line, the other from top to bottom on the tangent line. They had no label what-so-ever but I knew that the 1st one corresponded to manic depressive psychoses, the second, to schizophrenia, and that their movement ahead meant the course of both deseases.” —x— According to Hanawelt — Recurrent eg. watch football on T.V. then see in Hypnagogia — is after long stimulation & located in the retina. Eidetic images (other) seen in broad daylight. —x— Open minded people tend to see —x— One of Leanings correspondents said he was woken by a dog, layed still and saw — “I saw the big trunk of a

tree, with mossy roots; at the foot of the trees even several small indistinct white objects. I wasn’t sure what they were “mushrooms perhaps?” I thought — and they clearly became mushrooms. Then they shifted again and “No! they’re not mushrooms, they’re playing cards”; and in a trice they became playing cards. I saw the black and red pips on them; then all gone. This was becoming interesting and I waited for the next picture. It came as a bank of dense plants. Clumps like very large forget-me-nots, nothing else, only the leaves. I thought, now can I get these plants to blossom. No sooner had formed this thought the wish than I saw flowering stems and buds pushing out from among the leaves; they grew by degree, and unfolded. I was so thrilled I hardly dared breath. Most certainly I was

not asleep. My mentality was most keenly awake and absorbed in this quite new development. “If another comes” I said to myself “I’ll try to get something alive”. There came a sort of confusion and shaking in the darkness — indistinct bunches that moved — then I saw hanging down several legs and feet of game birds, the claws and scales on the legs like like; below them rose the head and forepart of a little animal that looked like a rat, it’s head was turned over and the mouth open. I saw the pink tongue & lips. Then it all vanished.” —x— Budzynski claims hypnagogic states are “super-suggestible” and capable of learning certain things more efficiently than during the day, when logical and analytical faculties are in control”.
TO REMEMBER THINGS GO OVER

IN MIND BEFORE SLEEP SUGGEST HYPNOGOGIC IMAGE + USE THAT TO REMEMBER IMAGE / INFO ! —x— —x— Silberer noted when (1) Drowsiness (2) effort to think = Hypnagogic imagery auto symbolic — Then image means something. If thinking of problem imagery may relate to problem. If just trying to stay awake then eg. Running down tunnel, means going towards sleep, the imagery will follow / depict your current mind state — Sometimes. —x— Awareness of the significance of the symbolism is not always present, in the majority of cases imagery remains a puzzle until one begins to pay attention to it and enters into a form of conversation with it. The difficulty lies in the degree of willingness on the part of the subject to enter into this form of associating or talking to oneself. Jung “allowing ones unconscious to emerge” becomes possible only when the ego acknowledges the existence of a partner to the discussion. —x— When the ego is absent it can appear !

If all meaningless then just an early state of hypnagogia. More meaningful when in a deeper state. —x— Van Dusen suggests hypnagogia is in the following stages (1) Random images & phrases (2) Images representative of ones state at the moment (3) images that are instructive helping questioning and learning from it. (4) images that break into trance like periods of enlightenment. In the depths of hypnagogia, the questioner and answerer become one in a kind of Satori or enlightenment. Van Dusen quotes: — “When nearly asleep I find myself locked into some kind of logical relationship. There may be a fixed image and I go over the logic within it’s form repeatedly. I have the impression it is like a perfectly balanced, very complex, logical presentation. When I awaken it is difficult to remember though. I may come out with some very paradoxical statement. When within it, all it’s logical

“`
relationships seem perfectly clear although complex and often paradoxical. —x— Hollingworth had experiments & conclusions at night which at the time of their conception “seemed highly rational, strikingly original and wonderfully significant”. “an idea, plan or desire is… able to make unimpeded progress from stage to stage of it’s development with what seems at the time to be unerring logic” —x— Hollingworth.
Hypnagogia in a way regressive in that it’s magical & childlike. —x— Because it comes as in a state of deep relaxation close to sleep then if practice consciously then will only get little imagery because tired / sleep. When learn more imagery then for longer one has basically learnt to put oneself into a deeply relaxed state for a prolonged period of time. —x—
“Human beings function in two mode says Deikman, (1) Receptive, directed towards

intake of enviorment (2) Active Action, towards manipulation of environment.
In ACTION mode, muscle system & sympathetic nervous system dominant physiological agents. EEG shows Beta waves & baseline muscle tension is increased. Principal psychological manifestation are focal attention, object based logic, heightened boundary perception and the dominance of formal characteristics over the sensory. Shapes & meanings have a preference over colours and textures. The Action mode is a state of striving.
Receptive mode – Sensory perceptual system is the dominant agent rather then the muscle system, and parasympathetic functions tend to be more prominent. EEG tends towards alpha waves and the baseline muscle tension is decreased. Other attributes of

the receptive mode are diffuse attending, paralogical thought processes, decreased boundary perception, and the dominance of the sensory over the formal. This mode would appear to originate and function maximally in the infant state”.
So Hypnagogic state may be a functional orientation of human nature. —x—
Characteristic of advanced hypnagogic state is the subject becomes completely absorbed in imaginal activitys, that is, becomes “fascinated” and loses his ability for reality testing. —x—
Have double consciousness during absorbed in it but also apart. While watching Hypnagogic imagery one may become absorbed and lose sense of contemplation, that is sense of fascination. Sometimes a person sets once withdrawn from environment has double-consciousness Attention employed receptively —x— !

INDUCTION + CONTROL + PROLONGATION
Often when trying to see a specific image turns up eg. try to see a red rose, a pink one turns up.
Warren — “I obtain these visualisations by concentrating the attention on the retinal field endeavouring to form pictures out of what I see and projecting them into a real scene. At first I see only the play of indefinite retinal light, which weave into a picture with the help of my imagination. Then all at once the picture becomes vividly real for an instant. I have never succeeded in prolonging these images. The effort to observe them attentively always throws them

back into their former state, and often an attempt to control them voluntarily has the same result.” Didn’t work because of an inappropriate mental attitude.
Ardis & McKellar drew a distinction between ATTENTION & SCRUTINY, noting the latter is not constructive / helpful.
Le_roy says to prolong, need an absence of voluntary attention.
Satre — if it appears, must not pay attention to the images themselves.
Myers — Concentration on the interpritation of imagery impedes their flow.
Sherwood, need quiet receptivity & interest.
Edmund — “The experience afforded a critical test of ones ability to be aware through two channels at simultaneously. Without losing the P.T.O

picture or one could think lightly and descriptively about it; or could perhaps describe it to another person. Alternatively music or even concentration could be listened to in a rather vague background fashion — but the moment definate attention was given to any of these, the picture vanished. This was a real object lesson: the difference between passive diffuse reception of incoming sense signals, and actively going out to meet them with focused attention.” —x— In this state changes can be brought about by suggesting them rather than willing them. One subject would “think” of changed colour, couldn’t suggest a specific. —x— to prolong, need attitude of receptivity, empathy —x— More imagery with an accepting person. Need to be “letting it happen.” Poe

had capacity (?knowing their orientation)) If imagery becomes “active” so it (the state) ceases. —x— Can add to the imagery in receptive mode if you consider it a partner of you? w moving towards the B objects. Don’t have I – It attitude as in waking when trying to manipulate. —x— Often no memory of imagery. Need Practice. Can learn to retain diffuse attention. Often when forget, just be one fascinated. FASINATED REASON DON’T REMEMBER LUCID DREAMS FASCINATION = LOSS OF CRITICAL FACULTY AS WRITTEN ON BY OPHIELE Once have a good degree of imagery, can pro increase mental activity with no loss of quality / interuption of state. HYPNOGOGIC SYNDROME PTO ->

TATTVA TRAINING
(1) Psychophysical Relaxation.
(2) Shift to “Passive Volition” (marked by quantitative reduction of thought process”
(3) Shift to parasympathetic predominance (accompanied by receptive mode shift).
(4) Reduction of exteroceptive & proprioceptive input.
(5) Psychological withdrawal, (marked by inwardly turned diffuse — absorbed attention & the appearance and increase of qualitative thought changes).
(6) Decreased arousal (marked by shift to high amplitude low frequency EEG rhythm s — mostly theta).
(7) Need or intention to sleep and / or dream. I because not have to sleep, can be called wakeful dreaming. —x— Because learn to let go, all

great health value. All experience state of hypnagogia. RELATIONSHIPS TO OTHER STATES — DREAMS. In Hypnagogia a person may observe his imagery turning into a full blown dream without a break in consciousness, that hypnagogia is the most suitable state for understanding dreams and controlling them and that it offers the opportunity of experiencing simultaneously wakefulness and dreaming. Often will become dream, can go into it. Astral projection often occurs in hypnagogic state. The Russian Ouspensky used to wake then look at hypnagogic imagery to fall back into a lucid dream. Said we dream backwards and remember forwards.

Thinking backwards activity is occult method of wakeful thinking and acquiring psychic flexibility. Method of lucid dreaming, create scene & step into it at the onset of sleep.
MEDITATION
Patanjalis “Yoga Sutras” stages are — yama, Niyama, asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana, dhyana & Samadhi. 1st 4 = Reduction of psychophysical distractions 1st 2 = quieting emotions & desires. Next 2 Reduction & elimination of exteroceptive & proprioceptive noise. 5th cultivates & deepens psychophysical withdrawal, attention taken from within. 6th concentration on object / image for certain period of time 7th attention limited to the object and the lenth of attention increases 7 = Yoga / Levin —x— Van Dusen says meditation – Hypnagogia – trance. Cos Hypnagogia

not lead to sleep as is normal, leads to final stage of Samadhi / enlightenment. Deikman adapted part of Pantajalis yoga, instructed subjects to adopt “passive abandonment” as they concentrated on a blue vase:- “By concentration I do not mean analysing the different parts of the vase, or thinking a series of thoughts about the vase, or associating ideas to the vase, but rather, trying to see the vase as it exists in itself, without any connections to other things. Exclude all other thoughts or feelings or sounds or bodily sensations. Do not let them distract you, Do not let them distract you, but keep them out so you can concentrate all your attention, all your awareness on the vase itself. Let the perception of the vase fill your entire mind.”

These instruction can be recognized as directions for psychophysical withdrawal and diffise of absorbed attention which, as we saw earlier, are marks of hypnagogia. The instructions to attention & concentration can be seen as instructions for a delicate state of fascination that presents itself spontaneously in Hypnagogia, and can be further prolonged and deepened in the latter by attending to and concentrating on the imagery. The relationship between meditation and hypnagogia becomes even closer when the object of concentration is an internal image. In the latter case, instead of the subject becoming fascinated by the emerging hypnagogic imagery, is is the case with hypnagogia, the procedure is reversed and an image is visualized and used to fascinate the subject.

Deikman – “The active stage of contemplative meditation is a preliminary to the stage or full contemplation, in which the subject is caught up and absorbed in a process he has initiated but which now seem autonomous, requiring no effort, Instead passivity – self surrender – is called for, an open receptivity.” This would lead to an increase vividness of the image, to its acquiring self-like qualitys and to its becoming “electochemically related” to the subject – causes merger with the subject and the object of attention, being unable to organise perceptions “everything, both in the foreground and background, seems to clamour for attention at equal intensity, resenting usual organisation.” as the enviornment exhibiting a kind of luminescence”.

Deautomatisation – Deikman “a ‘deautomatisation’, an undoing of the usual ways of perceiving and thinking due to the special way that attention was used, The meditation exercise could be seen as withdrawing attention from thinking and reinvesting it in percepts – a reverse of the normal learning sequence”.

Doing hypnagogia rejects outside enviornment & also logical thinking, causing permanent Mas-attatchment.

5 Principle features of mystical experience.
1 Intense realness (2) Unusual sensations (3) Unity (4) ineffability (5) trans-sensab phenomena.

(1) Sence of reality
reality transfer, because now inside, sence of realness goes over to the inside images, It leads to sence inner is real to exclusion of outer, may result in dissociation.

(2) Unusual Percepts.
An unusual mode of perception. Often physical changes eg “When the vase changes shape I feel this in my body, particularly my eyes… there is an actual kind of physical sensation as though something is moving there, which recreates the shape of the vase”. This reports the kind of electrochemical relationship between the subject & object discussed earlier as occurring in hypnagogia during the processes of internalisation and empathy is clearly present. About the above experience – Diekman – “this subject might have experienced the

the perception of a re synthesis, taking place following deautomatisation of the normal percept, that is, the percept of the vase was being reconstructed outside of normal awareness and the process of reconstruction was perceived as a physical sensation. —x— Astral plane, plane of Stars. “The deeper a subject is involved with hypnagogic experience the less likely he is to observe their possible ultimate spect-like nature. It remains debatable weather the ‘spects’ are indeed of ideoretinal origin”. —x— “Illumination” may mean hypnagogic illumination.

(3) Unity ineffability & trans-sensat phenomena Unity – perception of ones own psychic structure as the perception of the structure of the outside world. Ineffability – 3 kinds 1, Primitive memories, memories as an infant, bought about by compt contemplative state. No words meant because are in a state of non action, analysis, or seqnce, as a child eat. 2/ revelation too complex to verbalise “a revelation of the significance and interrelationship of many dimensions of life… becomes aware of many levels of meaning simultaneously and understands the totality of existence”. (5) Trans-Sensate phenomena. The experience goes beyond the customary sensory pathways, ideas, and memories; although filled with intense, profound and vivid perception: The experience is unidentifiable hence indescribable. On the deepest level of hypnagogia – Van Dusen: “is a kind of Satori or enlightenment. Suddenly the questions and answers are one. This one breaks into infinite images of all its representations. The individual awakens as though from a trance, puzzled by what was suddenly seen & experienced”. Poe: “[they] have in them a pleasurable ecstasy, as far beyond the most pleasurable of the world of wakefulness, or of dreams, as the heaven of the Northman theology is beyond its hell. I regard the visions, even as they arise, with an awe which, in some measure, moderates or tranquillizes the ecstasy, — so I regard them, through a conviction (which seems a portion of the ecstasy itself) that this ecstasy, in respect is of a character supernal to the human nature — is a glimpse of the spirit’s outer world; and I arrive at this conclusion, if this term is at all applicable to the instantaneous intuition by a perception that the delight experienced has, as its element, but the absoluteness of novelty, I say the absoluteness is in these fancies. Let me now form the physical impressions — there is really nothing even approximate in character + impressions ordinarily received. It is as if the five senses were supplanted by five myriad others alien to mortality”. —x— HYPNOGOGIA IS THE ONLY CONCERN WHEN READING ANY FORM OF EVEN REMOTELY MYSTICAL / SPIRITUAL EXERCISE. ~x~ ~~~ to lose ego. Schtze loses / slots to ?immerse. Ego death = the all schtze phrase that dismantl what. The mystic has trained him / her self to do.

P.S.I.

Always the first state is to be properly relaxed. White identified 5 steps in ESP process. (1) Relaxation. (2) Engaging the conscious mind. (2A) The Demand (3) The Waiting, the tension, and the release (4) The way the response enters consciousness. “Typically concentrates relaxedly on a mental image, eg. vase, until a state of fascination is achieved. At this point some psychics would demand that the appropriate picture or message appear to their consciousness. Most psychics would not demand, but formulate their intention for the PSI performance at the inception of the experiment and retain it diffusedly throughout the session”.

Sinclair — “Keep the eyes closed and the body relaxed, and give the order silently, and with as little exertion as possible” Detatched Expectation. In hypnagogic state senses become more accute. So slight sound can give a shock. Instructing on how to develop ESP Huson, having pointed out the conductiveness of hypnagogia to such enterprise, notes that after initial stages of psychophysical relaxation, one finds oneself staring into what feels like a boundless space. “In this depth the ‘imaginals’ appear dimly at first, but more solidly and clearly with practice. These things may be things you know in daily life like books, bottles or shoes.

or they may be large abstract shapes, often architectural in appearance. Keep your mental gaze on them and you’ll notice they are continually growing and evolving into something else, like a speeded up film of a plant growing. When I saw my 1st surrealist painting as a child, I knew exactly what the artist was portraying”. By this time, Huson explains, one has travelled 2/3 of the way to achieving true clairvoyance. The next step is to “hook” the ESP target. Later on in the same work he explicitly states that “Hypnagogic dreams can and do become channels for ESP scanning”. Butler says while scanning have a questioning mode without excitement. Some for

symbolic. It is the questioning mode that leads to clairvoyance, viz, they are not just standard hypnagogia anymore. One must pose a mental question or adapt a questioning attitude without interrupting ones receptive mode. Roberts — “The medium should not be satisfied to receive a name such as “Mary” but should ask “Which Mary? What is her other name?” When the double name is given we should ask for the town in which she lived. REMAIN RECEPTIVE — environment while verbalising. Sometimes letters spell out, other scenes come with hunches ect. Often all stays irrelevant until you learn to question it.

Hypnagogia & Esomatic phenomena. (obe – Apex). Most say happened when asleep, when waking or that Hypnagogic state is necessary. Other alters lead to sleep but better so called prolonged hypnagogic period. Monroe said after in moving to “in the hypnagogic state, when going to sleep — if he will but concentrate his attention upon himself and try to see what is really happening as he enters sleep. In other words, if he will but train himself to keep the balance between consciousness and unconsciousness —

while slightly favoring the former — without tension in mind — and will maintain this well into the hypnagogic state, he will feel the disconcordance, as the phantom enters the Zone of quietude, usually a falling sensation”

4 OBSERVATIONS.
(1) Psychological calmness and detatchment. in distinctly uniquely conscious don’t get involved beyond objective interest + fascination
(2) No analitical thought Passive observer like watching film.
(3) They state the experience the feel that they could could obtain an answer to any question they choose to formulate “a feeling of know without thinking”
(4) Hypnopompic trance

Paralys s. Awareness one is dreaming with knowledge one is dreaming. —x— Do with psychometry also. Visions of Spirit Saints Hypnagogic theory. There is always in the ?mind t knowledge one is engaged in PSI activity. Elimination of analytical thinking. The more you concentrate on Hypnagogia at sleep onset the longer the period of falling to sleep as one views the internal images, then later on in the stage there is increased alertnes / awareness “a person normally needs a certain amount of practice in order to learn to balance himself between

wakefulness & sleep and achieve a state of dreaming while awake. so the aspiring psychic too goes through a period of hypnagogisng, and after falling asleep in the process, before learning to retain wakefulness throughout the experience”.
CREATIVITY.
Brahms, Puccini, Wagner & Goethe describe trance like states from which they drew inspiration. “Edison used to work very hard in his research – at beta, the faster brain wave frequencies. Then when he would reach a “sticking point” he would take one of his famous cat naps. He would doze off in his chair, holding steel balls in the palm of his hands. As he would fall asleep –

drifting into alpha – his arms would relax & lower, letting the balls fall onto the pans on the floor. The noise would make Edison and very often he would awaken with an idea to continue his project.” Dickens used it also for many characters & plots. Hallman found criteria ie 5 necessary for the Creativity. (1) Connectedness (2) Non-rationality (3) Originality (4) Openness (5) Self-actualisation.

(1) Connectedness.
Hallman – “Connectedness comprises relationships which are neither symmetrical nor transitive; that is, the newly created connections as wholes are not equivalent to the parts being connected. Neither side of the equation validly implies the other, for the relationship is neither inferentiel nor casual; rather, it is metaphoric and transformational.” Einsteins relativity came after 10 years thought, he got out of bed one day.
Reported by German Chemical Society in 1890 by Kekulé. “One evening dozed on a London bus saw atoms before his eyes did same that even my also. Five years later: – “I was sitting writing at my text book; but the work did not progress; my thoughts were elsewhere. I turned my chair to the fire & dozed. Again the atoms were gambolling before my eyes. This time the smaller groups kept modestly in the background.

_/_ BENZENE MOLECULE
My mental eyes, rendered more acute by repeated visions of the kind, could now distinguish larger structures, of manifold conformation: long rows, sometimes more closely fitted together, all twining and twisting in snake-like motion. But look! What was that? One of the snakes had seized hold of it own tail, and the form whirled mockingly before my eyes. As if by flash of lightning I woke up: and this time also I spent the rest of the night working out the consequences of the hypothesis. —x— Sciences get “flash” illumination. Helps to wish for it to bring it on.

Wallas- “It is necessary that the process should not only last for an appreciable time but should also be, during that time, sufficiently conscious for the thinker to be at least aware that something is happening to him. On this point the evidence seems to show that both the unsuccesful trains of association, which might have led to the “flash” or success, and the final succesful train, are normally either unconscious, or take place (with “risings” and “fallings” of consciousness as seems to approach or recede) in that periphery or “Hinge” of consciousness which surrounds our “focal” consciousness as the suns corona surrounds the

disk in full luminosity. The “fringe consciousness” may last up to the flash instant, may accompany it, and in some cases may continue beyond it. But, just as it is very difficult to see the sun’s corona unless the disk is hidden by a total eclipse, so it is very difficult to observe our “Hinge Consciousness” at the instant of full illumination, or to remember the preceding “Hinge” acts till illumination has taken place. A Williams James says “when the conclusion is there, we have always forgotten most of the steps proceeding its attainment”.
