Dear Ma, Hello, how are you? Well I hope. Just a scribbled note I’m afraid.
I’m Enclosing: –
* VISA RECEIPTS
* EXPENCE RECEIPTS
* POEMS
* PHONECARD.
I’m sending a tape in a seperate package. I was going to wait until I’d finished the little book to put in with it, but hell, while I’m here I may as well because some things can drag on forever if you wait for conditions to be perfect. Avoid Procrastination.
I know. The secrets out. Ann told me the London Rd. House collapsed. Never mind.
I’m in Kuantan at the moment. I got to Mersing but left the next day because it was like Naval in the Philippines. Just one main street and a mountain I didn’t like it. I like the way I can get up and go now. I used to get trapped in places but that won’t happen any more. Kuantan’s a bit bigger, but not so many places to go. Hopefully I can get up in time and leave for Cherating tommorow. The I-Ching said it’s possibly bad there and I may have to leave quickly but I want to see it. The I-Ching (fortune telling) is generally negative at the moment. It keeps telling me now is the period of the Waning moon before new, so I guess I’ll Work, which is going O.K I suppose. I have the big book planned and I’ve scribbled half the little one.
I’m still walking round with my slide-film from Chang Mai, I can’t find anywhere to develop it.
Concerning money, I guess Ann will have told you I ran out. Well, I was thinking about it and it’s probably O.K. ‘cos my card is always in a money belt, even when I sleep. If the
-2-
People who took the first copy tried it again it’s too late now to backdate it so they couldn’t take anymore. Also because they don’t have the card now they couldn’t swipe it ect, I think it’s Safe now.
I was thinking about affirmations. When you constantly repeat a phrase to make it come through I notice that my affirmation eventually became my mental fantasy so it’s simply a mental picture coming manifesting. If you combine Mental pictures (visions with affirmations it’s only a matter of time until your unconscious mental pictures (Fantasys / daydreams) follow suit.
I suppose you won’t have much time to read / write letters now the season starting I guess.
I’ve been pritty much on the move since I left Changmai, apart from 2 weeks in K.L. because of my camera I’ve stayed places as long as I was happy there, which is the way to live your life.
Despite the I-Ching I’ll carry on North. It tells me it’s unlucky where ever I ask if I should I go so I may as well make a a move and just see what transpires. I aint staying in Kuantan, there’s nowhere to sit, though it was a nice hotel to sit in and get my bits sorted.
Right, I’m sure I’ll write a long rambling letter when I get to a place with empty restaurants and moon lit views,
Until then,
Miss You.
Keep Well.

I ONLY WANTED ORANGE : BUT ENDED WANTING YOU,
SWAYING IN MY DREAM IN AN ENDLESS QUEUE,
TWELVE BEERS, LINED LIKE SOLDIERS, BY THE TILL,
THEN YOUR EYES CAUGHT MINE, FOREVER UNTIL,
WHY?
YOUR HUSBAND?
YOUR SORROWS?
PARTY OR FUNERAL?
I CAN NEVER KNOW,
BUT FOR THAT ONE MOMENT,
WHEN OUR EYES BARED OUR SOULS,
AND I WANTED YOU,
YOUR BREASTS WERE SMALL AND INVITING IN THEIR FREEDOM,
MY MIND PERCEIVED YOUR FORM THROUGH A SWEAT CLINGING DRESS,
ENOUGH!

Dear M,
Hello, how are you? Well I hope. My God, have I got alot to tell you or is the Dali Lamma Buddhist? But, I’ve come out tonight specifically to write you this letter so I can discloce everything you wanted to ask on the phone but were afraid to ask.
I have written briefly to you since I left Australia but I don’t think I discloced everything. I suppose I’d better start with a factual history of G to now.
One thing I ommitted to mention was the German woman, I don’t even know her name.
After I got back to Perth I went going out incase I bumped into Janko. When Joanne came she said it was a defunct situation so We decided I should move to Scarborough Youth hostel to get away from it all. I did. After Joanne went to bed I was on my own there and started to go on a real downer so I went and got some wine
I drank it outside on the lawn in the dark and was soon joined by a non drinking German woman. We sat and talked. After some time and alcohol I asked her if she had any food & ended up in her “unit kitchen”. She had “Please Please me” by the Beatles so I listened to it, then we slept together.
It was really horrible in the morning because she was 45 but looked 10 years older, I was being hung over while she was being romantic. She assumed I was going to Stay. I had to just leave without saying goodbye while she went to buy breakfast. Have I already told you about this. I spent the whole day feeling awful and showered for about an hour. I think she had that thing where women menopause & don’t stop bleeding, I was covered in dried blood. Also she was her weirdo. She asked me for advice about her son who is older than me and a heroin addict and when I woke up in the morning she was worshipping the sun through the window.
[right margin, written vertically: oh dear. Poor me ?sick.]
I don’t remember if I told you about all this already but still, I definately didn’t tell anyone about the blood, how would I bring it up in polite conversation.
It’s funny about this pen. Most of my non-mundane waking life is spent writing and a deficient writing implement can impede the flow, so I have an interest in finding “happy pens” to illustrate in litriture my happy thoughts. In sydney I knew Geoff was coming with some money so I thought I’d treat myself to a nice flowy ink rollerball. It cost like a pound or something but it only wrote at a certain angle, smudged on shinny surfaces and was scratch. Last night at 3am. it ran out so I went to 7-11 and got this for 4 bath. I don’t know how much that is but for me a lovely pen, really smooth and uniform black. Just goes to show eh? Well whatever.
Well I made it up here on my “Jaunt North” With a few little problems on the way.
I had to sleep in a toilet in Malaysia after a sleepy malaysian got concused about the bus fare and left me without money. That was the night I phoned Ann. Apart from that it was just a long trip.
Oh yes, in Singapore I saw Bertrand, the Blackman who was there with the Professor, but we didn’t get on. Also in Bangkok I saw someone me & Sunrea used to know. Also in Singapore I met a New Zelander with loads of dope, he needed to smoke it before he went over the border. I’ve learnt to be careful with any referance to drugs so if I ever want to talk about it again I’ll hint and suppose you will understand what I’m on about. Anyway I took some in Singapore, which is the last place I expected to see it and saw nothing up here in “The Golden Triangle” which supplies the west with most of it’s Opium needs. Wierd. Na?
Well anyway, Christmas day I had some beer in a place that was quite nice before I got on the bus, then I spent boxing day in Bangkok, then I was in Chiang Mai.
I told you about the not so nice place? Well, now I’m in this nicer place. The last few days I’ve slept on the floor because of a cockroach in my bed. I went out to buy powder but all I could find were great big things like chemical drums or something, with warnings & instructions in Thai over them, so I bought a little plastic blue trap for ?£10.
I got home & read the instructions. It came in two parts. Part one goes on the floor with the bait (salted crisps, some spit and coke) in the middle. It’s surrounded by four trap doors which only open one way. Part two snaps over the base with four further trapdoors which trap the cockroach in an easily removable unit which is then left in the sun to kill them, or immersed in water to drown them. The doors seemed a bit heavy to me and I wasn’t sure they’d snap afterwards, the whole thing seemed a little obvious to me and my mind presented me with an image of “my” cockroach shaking his head and laughing, running off over the horizon with my passport, credit card,
and one way ticket to England shouting “Wanker!” while I’m left removing the cracked trap from off my anus.
Well anyway, I sat on my mattres (now on the floor) and read. No sooner had I sat down than my tormentor appeared. I watched it crawl up the wall right past the trap. I willed it to crawl down mentally, trying to transfer my commands to its brain, then, I swear to God, it FELL right off the wall and landed within inches of the door. After it had gather itself from the fall and straigtened it’s tie it went up to the door and… walked straight through….. halfway. It eat the bait but because it’s body was so big it didn’t need to go in all the way through the door. My heart was racing with the cliff hanging situation. it almost stopped dead when I accidentally rustled a plastic bag with my leg. I froze the poor to see if my prey would back out and go for the credit card, but it carried on eating.
— 7 —
I edged over to the trap so I could see what was going on. Now, because cockroaches are Nocturnal the trap is dark translucent blue so I couldn’t see exactly it’s position, but I could see the shinny metal trap doors. I could see where it hadn’t gone through the second door and I could see the other door which it had come through was still open. The base of the trap is black so I had no idea what the cockroach was doing, except it was either still halfway in and was under the door, or God forbid, fully inside the door, but the door was JAMMED OPEN. To turn the light on would be to panick it and possibly lose it through a jammed door. I was left sitting there, peering in the darknes and praying to providence. During all this the cockroach was eating the food and watching me with it’s superior nocturnal vision, laughing a sinister, vicious laugh. In it’s tormented and twisted mind it decided to…
— 8 —
It knew in the twilight all I could see were the trap doors. It needed me to lean forward in curiosity so it could jump out, plunge the knife in me, take the I.D. and be away to blighty.
Very slowly it edged an antenna through the second door, pushed it open a milimeter and felt around. I leaned forward in anticipation, but not quite enough for it to go for the kill. The hand I couldn’t see was, unknown to me, undoubtedly on it’s concealed knife, to entice me to come closer it pushed the antenna further in and I saw the head outlined against the metal of the trapdoor. As I leaned forward, in an equal movement, he slid the knife from it’s sheaf. Our faces were coming closer together as it’s body tenzed with a killer instinct. Then, Suddenly…..
— 9 —
The first door snapped shut. It had forgotten it was moving away from it. There was a clanking of metal as it’s weapon fell to the floor. I was elated. It was now trapped in the first part of the trap, but I was by no means out of the woods yet. While it stayed there there was no way I could open the trap without it escaping it needed to be in the indosed part. Yet, for the first time in the whole incident it was unsure of itSelf. Who would win this battle of raging spirits?
[horizontal line]
Oh shit, I’m bored of this story, I’ve more important things to talk about. To sum it up yes, it went in the second part of the trap and I left it in direct sunlight as instructed but when I got home theisevening it was still alive, I don’t have the guts to drown it but so I’m not still sure what exactly I intend to do now.
I’ve finally caught the devil and it’s still tormenting me.
I shall triumph. [Diagram: side view of Roach Motel trap showing TOP, BASE, and doors (opens upward only)] [Diagram: Roach motel with roach partially inside and sword/weapon on floor, labeled “The cockroach 1/3 size of actual hellcat” with a “VISA” card label nearby]

The first is a book called “The Dharma bums” which Junko lent me and really affected me. Did I tell you she once asked me my favorite book and when I bumped into her that last night she had it in her rucksack and was reading it.
The other is a book called “Hypnogogia” which you know all about, I have that letter I sent you photocopied and by my bed, (on the floor, I shall triumph).
— 11 —
Well now I’m alone I can put the theory into practice. Incidentally:
I’VE INVENTED THE PERFECT SYSTEM OF MAGICK. but I’ll tell you about it later in the letter, which is becoming an epic, is it not?
Anyway, one application of the hypnogogia knowledge is astral projection, or more simply put, the spirit leaving the body. I’ve only tried this once, two days ago, and… it worked.
I’ve already, I think 1 year ago, explained the method. I remember I was using my Buddah Statue to focus my attention on. Well now I have a picture, the method is the same except I know what I’m looking for.
2 days ago I was falling asleep trying to see intent on me the picture, which was actually on the other side of the room. I started to lose it and drift into unconsciousness when, for no reason what so ever, I come to and said forcefully,
“I’m coming out and I’m staying out.” My eyes opened and I was on the other side of the room looking at my sleeping body on the floor.

The different thing about this time is I didn’t snap back, I was out for about half an hour which is amazing. I missed it though, just walking round looking at the hotel and enjoying the feeling. When I do it again I think it will help to have a specific objective / task to perform before I go to sleep. Also I could repeat that sentence as I fall asleep, and try in the morning upon wakening also. I’ll let you know what happened happens.
Also meditation is an exercise mainly (I never can spell exactly right, it’s exercise, is it not?) to stimulate hypnagogia, I have began experiments to find out. Strang things are happening (but good) I’ll let you know when I have something significant to report.
Affirmations have been an amazing success with me in 1994. This year I am repeating the experiment, but with the two big mistakes I made last time corrected. Firstly they contained negatives, for example if you want to be healthy you do not repeat “I am not sick” as your subconscious will pick up on the word sick and
— 13 —
manifest it. The correct word would be “I am healthy” ect. 1994’s experiment did manifest but I’m pretty sure those negatives fucked me.
The other problem was I stopped all spiritual practice when things manifested and I believe that may be a big mistake. I have got everything into place now and intend to continue it for a year no matter what manifests.
This is all being recorded on a daily basis, so in my little diary it is recorded how many affirmations I’ve done, a mark from 1-100 as to how deep the meditation was, the same for the level & length of hypnagogia at sleep onset, my mood = 1-100 +/- ect. At the end of one complete year all the information can be transferred onto graphs to discover if there is a link for example between hypnagogia and subjective moods. Namely is my theory hypnagogic sessions conductive to happiness true, It’s a hypothesis, i.e. a testable statement which I now intend to test and publish the results. Not just that but lots of questions. All to be proved by numbers. The graphs could have significant events marked
— 14 —
on them so they’re not misleading.
It definately helps to write manifesting desires down. Occultists know your thoughts create reality so they think the right thoughts with creative visualisation, that repeated phrases become beleifs, hence affirmations so what about the written word? _Words_ Why not write down the affirmations daily? Why not write down your desires daily? That way every output you have is being geared towards your magick, yes, I think it will work.
— x —
All this leads me on to the perfect system of magick, which I think I’ve discovered and am about to test. I think it’s a completely new system and I think it’s the only system that will consistently work for anybody. It contains all of the above ideas, but, a large problem is constant visualisations. Everybody has desires when they daydream. To make an occultist must learn to see them constantly, identically, with emotion, in the same order and with faith. _crossed out: This is_
— 15 —
This has always been very difficult, until now. I think I’ve cracked it. I’ve been working on it since October, I put it into place & set it running properly on Jan 1st, it took me 2 days to realise it was impractical, but only needed a little fine tuning, I think in a week it will be perfect. Yes. I’m going to give it to you. It’s like a ham of plenty. To those who have ears the heavens will open.
Well, I’ve got a pig load of shit to do. Indeed, everything I’ve done for 2 years I consider to be work in the nature of research so when I finally get going I intend to set all the earnings off against my current expenditure (which you know is considerable). Therefore I keep books (didn’t know that did you?) I have millions of receipts, they’re no good as V.A.T. receipts because they’re not English but hopefully they’ll mean I don’t have to pay tax for ages. I must get those sorted and send them safely back. Then I must label ten films and send them. I’ve the postcards to do, fibs oh dear, I’m snowed under, but when it is
— 16 —
all done I’ll get to work. I’ll commit my perfect system and knowledge to paper in the form of an extended lecture, and I’ll send it to you with permission to read it and you’ll see what the hell I’m on about. It will hopefully, eventually form appendix one of a book I intend to call infact: “Perfect Magick”. I think you’ll be happy.
— x —
I do think too much don’t I? People have been telling me that for two years and I’m only just beginning to understand them. I _cause_ I often talk my self down, I have an idea to do something and all the thoughts of why I shouldn’t fill my head. I became obsessed with trivial matters. Now I have, or am beginning to have, the habit of recognising that and am changing my “can’ts,” to “can’s”.
— x —
Right. I think I told you _crossed out: ?_ somewhere of my new method of waking didn’t I? Well, whatever, the changes I intend to make are as follows:- Because I lost the diary I intend
— 17 —
to keep only short, little books which will be completed in one place and sent after duplication to U.K. Audio tapes record daily happenings, also sent to U.K. At the end of ~~each~~ months postcards are to be sent to the address, this will ensure they are instantly recognisable from photo indexes. Each month will have two identical postcards. The postcards will contain the months data already explained like mood, hypnogogia ect. to be formed into a later graph, and will also have the months significant manifestations. All this ~~information~~ is to the eventual formation of the 1995 graph, the graph which will hopefully prove my new system. Right, that’s the main changes. Now, I think this envelopes going to be really thick, I have an absolute ton of stuff to send off so I can’t put too much in. One thing in there is the Christmas Card Junko & I wrote to you, containing a message from Junko and a photo of her. Considering I’m not likely to see her again they’ve suddenly become precious, even more so since I’ve lost 72 pictures & negatives of her, please do not lose them.
— 18 —
The other thing is about half the correspondance that occurred between “Nova” and myself, that’s the newspaper that accepted my article, I didn’t enclose all of it because this ~~magazine~~ letters going to be too damn big as it is, but it will give you an idea of what transpired. Damn, I knew this pen would be too good to last.
I think that’s about all I’d better send because this envelopes becoming a brick, I’ll dump all the other stuff off on A+G.
Geoff wanted me to drop Louise a line, I haven’t forgotten, I really am terribly busy, but it’s a satisfying busy because I’m starting to get somewhere now.
Did you see a plane come down? When that happens all the travellers talk about it, I have built for the grace of God ect. I used to really like flying but I grow wary as I grow older.
I get hungry now did I ever tell you? I think all ~~this~~ the time I was in England I was always near a snack, here, if I don’t get it myself nobody else does, I think my body responds by giving me strong hunger pangs at regular intervals.
— 19 —
Even when I wake up in the morning my priority is breakfast, and I really relish good food, I never did before. It was just something I did to stop dying.
Joanne gave me 5 christmas presents when I saw her last. I was on the road Christmas so I opened them New Years Day. They were.

That’s nice isn’t it? She’s still a bit wierd though, and the only lover (apart from the German) I didn’t lament for an extended period, maybe I did it all in one week. Junko’s promised to send me some cross-stitch she’s doing but I wouldn’t bank on hearing from either of them.
The situation concerning border politics of my surrounding countries is a confused as when I was here last. Nobody knows where you can/can’t go. I’ll have to try the embassys myself. I’m not sure where it shall be best I’ll let you know when I’m going.
— 20 —
Oh christ, it’s 20 pages already Man, I’ve more to say but I’ll have to stop. Hope you can read this but I’m currently lying on the floor because “my” cockroach is on the bed and it’s moving around because it becomes active at nighttime. What am I going to do with it. I feel sorry for it now. I keep thinking shall I give it some water? but I must resist or it’ll end up as my pet.
Well, it was nice to speak to you ~~on the~~ ~~the~~ ~~last~~ ~~I~~ ~~was~~ ~~only~~ ~~trickle~~ of stuff arriving at Ann’s soon. I thought I’d be devastated to be on my own again but I’m happy at the moment, I do love this continent. Lots to do also.
I hope everything is well with you and continues in that vein. I look forward in eager anticipation to your dispatched letter.
I love you, even when I forget to say it.
Isn’t the universe amazing?

Happiness as a Slimming Tool
Overview
In the United States, 30,000 deaths are attributed to obesity and the carrying of excess weight every year. According to the Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, the problem is getting worse. In the last recorded figures obesity rose by 6%, equally between religious and demographic groups.
The problem isn’t only in America, and it’s not that people are unaware of it. Because of the available health information and the intense media pressure to have a “perfect body”, 250,000 women in Europe, Canada and America will die of an eating related disorder associated with incorrect diet this year. One out of every five women and one in twelve men suffer from an eating related disorder, or a severe illness related to a diet problem.
A study in Australia showed that half of adolescent women think they are too fat. Nine out of ten have been on a diet, 20% of these had used unhealthy weight-loss strategies, such as skipping meals, fasting, self-induced vomiting, laxative abuse, diuretic use, slimming tablets and smoking.
Returning to the USA, this problem has now been noted by the government. The US health department, in conjunction with the IRS, consider correct dieting to be so important that they are currently offering tax deduction for a doctor prescribed weight-loss program.
Many people have come to believe that the answer to all of these problems is acceptance. BBC statistics show that 21% of women are obese as are 17% of men, but 32% of women and 46% of men are merely overweight. Out of the deaths from slimming disease, how many people began from an overweight or even ideal-weight condition?
In the early 1970’s a radical group of fat women known as the Fat Underground pioneered a political analysis of fat oppression. Using suppressed facts from decades of medical research, they challenged medical and cultural stereotypes of fat as inherently unhealthy, overeating as the cause of fatness, and weight-loss dieting as an easy and safe “cure”. They showed how fat oppression is linked to lookism, sexism, racism, classism, ageism and ableism — and how the massive economic power of the dieting industry skews the content of media reporting towards anti-fat biases.
Since then, movement in this direction has been progressive. In 1986, Largess, The Network for Size Esteem, was founded with a mission to “create personal awareness and social change which promotes a positive image, health and equal rights for people of size”. So the aim wasn’t to actually encourage being overweight, just promote the acceptance of different sizes in society — yet the health issue is still acknowledged.
In 1992, the first International No Diet Day (INDD) was held on 6th May. The theme for 2002 was “Love your body”. Parts of the manifesto read:
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet
Celebrate the beauty and diversity of ALL our natural shapes and sizes.
Declare a personal one-day moratorium on diet/weight obsession.
Honour the victims of eating disorders and weight-loss surgery.
Help end weight discrimination, sizism and fatophobia.
But another part says “Affirm everyBODY’s right to health, fitness and emotional well-being” and “learn the facts about weight-loss, dieting, health and body size”.
So, over the decades, a positive movement of size acceptance has arisen — but, although this is very positive for people of size, that fact still remains that obesity kills more people than smoking. Is some kind of answer to be a reasonable weight, then not be obsessed but happy? Why don’t people just do that, slim down to a reasonable size, and have a relaxed, non-obsessive attitude towards the body? Why do so many dieting attempts fail? Why does obesity, real or imagined, cause such misery? Why are there so many people who aren’t over-weight, who hate their bodies anyway? It could be media pressure, but this requires societal change. Is there anything the individual can do in the face of this pressure? If people want to eat less and simply cannot, or keep eating when not hungry — is there any way to find out actually why, what is wrong, and then achieve a reasonable body weight, body acceptance and most of all happiness?
One group is even concluding that the entire issue is an addiction problem. In 1997 Judith C. founded Food Addicts Anonymous, in West Palm Beach, Florida. There are now over 150 FAA meetings worldwide.
“The FAA program is based on the belief that food addiction is a biochemical disease. By following a food plan devoid of all addictive substances, recovery is possible.”
But what if the problem isn’t food addiction but diet addiction? You can see from some of the groups already mentioned, many people see the way forward as being fat acceptance, ending sizism and changing media images of the “perfect body”. This is good approach, and hopefully the day will come where it really doesn’t matter what body you have, but are judged by your character.
The problem is, as laudable as this much awaited to day is — it isn’t here yet. To change the entire media, even Hollywood, to promoting overweight as attractive as opposed to comedy, will take many years, perhaps even our lifetime. For people who are over-weight as opposed to obese, then self-acceptance rather than one more fad diet could be the answer. But for the obese, health is also a concern.
Also, what if the obsessive self-hatred that some people endure isn’t caused entirely by the media. It’s true, that the media puts a huge pressure on us to be prefect — but even if all this changed, children would still mock the “different” obese child at school, and the lack of self-esteem would likely be carried into adulthood. Partners could pressure us to lose weight. If, every time someone looks in the mirror, they feel self-loathing and mental pain, would that really change just because the media were more accepting and better role models existed? The fact is, we pressure
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet
don’t only arise in reaction to things in the world being perceived by the senses. Four hours later, at home having dinner, just remembering the earlier insult, the thought of it, can cause unhappiness.
Happiness as a Slimming Tool is, amongst other things, a method to directly observe the independence of emotion. Through practical exercises, the reader can learn to habitually focus on “pure emotion”, separately from its cause. This takes a little explaining, but the theory and practice should become clear from the full synopsis and chapters enclosed.
Once this independence is observed, then many things can be achieved. In the same way that, rather than having random thoughts, it’s possible to choose certain ones because we know what a thought is. Once it’s understood exactly what, in essence, an emotion is, it can be created (sans a cause) in the same manner.
The role of the inner-body is explained. Self-loathing isn’t always in reaction to the physical body in the world, but also the way we picture ourselves in the mind. But this inner-self picture in the mind is very important because it eventually creates the person we are in the world. Obviously, not every inner-self picture will become the future. If you picture yourself having a nice exotic cocktail on the surface of red planet mars, the mental picture might cause happiness as a fun daydream, but not excitement, because expectation and possibility are not present.
If you think that you’d like to go for a nice walk in the park, imagine yourself doing it, then it can become your future because the mental picture exists with possibility and is expected.
Many people with a weight-problem are incapable of picturing themselves as being slim in a way that causes EXCITEMENT. This is because, deep down, it’s not considered possible.
Once the independence of emotion can be practically observed, and the fact of “emotional transference” has been explained, then a mental picture of a desired self can be created, and expectation, possibility and excitement are then independently raised — and consciously linked to the picture. The happiness this picture causes now can make that previously impossible dream possible — and if enough expectation is raised with an ensuing emotion of excitement, likely.
A formal method to do this is presented. Once it has been achieved, it can be applied to replace habitual and negative (and fat) spontaneous inner-self pictures. You can choose happiness now, to create the body you want in the future.
The independence of emotion is further examined, while actually eating. The emotional reaction to the enjoyment of food, once freed, can be consciously chosen, to extend beyond the period of eating or even be experienced before. This lessens attachment to food as a source of happiness or a comforter, as the reader discovers new ways to directly choose the emotions that they have always (misguidedly) thought needed to be in reaction to food.
However, to be completely whole, it’s also necessary to heal certain demons. Self-loathing is an emotion many people feel in connection with their body — but it’s connected when it’s allowed it to be. Remember, every emotion is free by nature. By looking at negativity or pain in its true essence, detached from a “cause”, it is actually just another variation of emotional energy. This is what’s
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet
been torturing us all our lives, while we fight and push it away. In its pure form, it can be opened to and shall eventually fade because now it’s an energy without the cause which was fueling it. This is not repression because the mental picture of the body, or view in the mirror or whatever caused this pain, isn’t pushed away, but is left and observed in an independent form. It’s just a habit of freeing the emotion completely and facing it squarely. When this is observed, apart from a cause, it’s actually an insubstantial thing which fades, appearing less and less and one day can be gone forever.
Of course, some people, regardless of if they are overweight or not, deliberately overeat as an act of self-hatred, and thus can also be helped by directly focusing on, and freeing pure emotion.
When the independence of emotion is not only understood but also constantly viewed in this way, both the world and mind become much less scary places. Hunger can be deliberately induced and viewed, almost as a kind of meditation, to see it objectively, dispassionately, and observe what the mind radiates while it is present. This is how it’s discovered why, up until now, every attempt at dieting has been a failure. Whatever thoughts radiate when observing hunger, simply free the emotion — and hunger can become a undemanding, easily bearable physical sensation, as opposed to the hellish mental wrangle it’s always been in the past.
The whole method of Happiness as a Slimming Tool is paradoxical. It works, but the more weight is lost, the less it’s cared about it. But the very fact this new body is being created by use of the inner-self and emotions opens the doors to new, further possibilities. If this can be brought to pass, then can the same method create other situations beside a slim body? If, for example, someone has always had trouble getting where they’d really like to be career-wise, is it the same problem? When imaging themselves where they’d ultimately like to be, then is that only a fantasy? Does it need a new emotion attached? Does the inner-self keep on spontaneously existing throughout the day, as being stuck in the current position — does an emotion need to be freed?
Now this new method goes beyond using what has been learnt about the mind concerning body image, and concentrates on what could really be achieved with the rest of life, where true happiness is. The same mental processes which caused the weight-loss can create a transformed future in all spheres of life.
The last part of the work goes beyond not only the body, but also happiness itself, and examines the deeper issues that have been raised by everything learnt and practiced so far. If emotion is a free energy and there is a watcher that experiences it — what exactly is this emotion of energy and the watcher that is perceiving it? Do emotions always have to be moving between poles of opposites, or is there some ultimate state of freedom? Do emotions have to be constantly in flux and the watcher along with them? Does everything have to be changeable? If consciousness has a permanent form that is free, how is it obtained?
This last chapter is essentially concerning a larger spirituality, and about transcending all emotion. Without a single reference to God or any particular religion, this “ultimate state” is examined, and two very gentle exercises are presented for the readers to experiment for themselves.

The Market
Who would buy Happiness as a Slimming Tool?
• “Chronic dieters”, who have been trying every diet there is for years, and have now either realised, or are ready to realise, that the problem is neither lack of will power nor finding the right diet.
• People who are unhappy much of the time because of intense body-hatred. Some might be overweight, but many will be an ideal weight, yet intensely hate themselves anyway. They want to think “to hell with it” and be happy… but don’t know how.
• Obese people who need to, or would like to, lose weight for health reasons, but don’t believe in obsessing about a perfect body. They want to slim, not to perfection, but to maybe even an overweight size they are _happy_ with. They don’t want a book with specific diets and a perfect weight to obtain, just one that shows how to eat less without being miserable about it.
• People who live with or love, either chronic dieters who obsess about food, or people with such a high degree of body loathing which affects their lives so much, it’s almost a disability.
• Readers already interested in subjects such as alternative psychology and human potential, who are neither particularly over-weight nor concerned about it, but wouldn’t mind being a little slimmer or changing their relationship to food. They would find _Happiness as a Slimming Tool_ a fascinating experiment.
The Competition
The idea that weight problems and self-loathing exist in the mind before the body, and should therefore be healed in the mind, is not wholly new. Because parts of this type of method are meditation based in nature, audio versions of such work are a popular medium. _A meditation to Help with Weight Loss_ by Bella Naparstek (Time Warner Audio Books) is one such project. This has the advantage of being a narrated meditation, thus will help concentration together with its relaxing music. Although this CD has sold well, there are some serious problems. For example, at one point the narrator asks you to consider each body part, but when the turn of the knees comes, it’s stated “you might feel discomfort and tension there”, which is a very strange thing to say on a CD that is designed to be played everyday.
Also, this is to be played daily, for the rest of the time the mind is unregulated. The system doesn’t address the fact that any meditation is a practice for how the mind shall _always_ feel.
A conventional print book, _The Love Hunger Weight Loss Workbook_ (Meir Minirth Publisher), works on the premise that to cure compulsive eating, you must find the emotional scars that cause this behaviour. Yet this book also has some serious flaws. Firstly, it assumes all overeating stems
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet
7
from problems in childhood. This isn’t always the case; much evidence points towards a genetic propensity, and people who have had a happy childhood and still have good relationships with their parents might find this book hard to relate to.
The book explains that food shouldn’t be the only thing you think about… then goes on to recommend that everyone diet, providing food plans as low as 1000 calories, which is not good for the metabolism.
This book was written by four separate doctors from the Minirth Mier New Life Clinic and constantly mentions the services they offer. Also the book is very Christian-centred, which some people in a multi-faith society might find jarring.
_The Thin You Within You_ by Abraham J. Twerski (Warner Books) is written by a specialist in addictive behaviour, and explains that it is not the lack of will power that leads to over-eating, but an absence of self-esteem.
This is true, and the book is well written. Despite this, it is essentially a pep talk with some cartoons. There is no actual method for improving self-esteem other than a few affirmations.
Lastly, there is THINIMAGE, by Laurie Straub, (MindQuest Corp.). This also uses mental imaging and impressively tries to attach new found beliefs to mental pictures. There are no diets but a wholly mind-based technique of weight loss. Her methods have been validated by research from Sydney University.
The problems are, one of the conclusions is that people become over-weight because they subconsciously want to be. In males it’s to make them look bigger and so be safer among other males. In women, it’s to avoid unwanted sexual advances or avoid sex altogether due to repression. To be honest, this idea is plain weird, especially considering people who sometimes look in the mirror and feel such unhappiness that they wish they weren’t alive.
It’s not actually a traditional book, but a 40 day “course” of one cassette tape and one workbook to fill in everyday, for $84.95, which is really too much for a course without individual support.
But also this, just like every other book mentioned, works on the premise that people are unhappy because of their weight, and so must use meditation or some other method to lose weight, and then find happiness. Hopefully, by now, you understand this is actually the wrong way around.

Detailed Chapter Breakdown
(The introduction and first two chapters are included)
Chapter Three – The Meditation in Practice
How to examine life and goals to construct the kind of mental sequence to raise the maximum amount of emotion.
Because it’s the possibility and emotion which count, symbolism is just as effective, and sometimes more so, in raising the emotion required. Examples of symbolism in use and how to discover personal symbolism from dreams.
How emotion and excitement is physically felt in the body, and because this is an indication that the practice is being performed properly, ways to cultivate this.
Dealing with distractions and how to transform negative mental pictures which spontaneously arise, by freeing the painful emotion and experiencing it directly, thus it is acknowledged and eventually healed, no longer needing to exist. There’s no need to wait until these mental pictures, which have tortured some people for most of their lives, arise. These have, in the past, created the physical body as it now exists. Yet when these are consciously brought into being they are not creating a future because they have no emotion to fuel them. It’s experienced independently, and when, after practicing, one day we can create all the negative pictures and no emotion rises, we know we are free.
The best way to fall asleep, an auxiliary night practice, to review and heal the bumps and knocks received in the day, then magnify positive reactions in the future.
Chapter Four — Widening the Practice
Expanding what’s been learnt in the formal practice into a happiness habit.
The happiness stroll. How a simple journey, such as to work, the shops or around the park, which would otherwise be unproductive time, can become a chance to create the future with happiness in the present.
Using mundane tasks requiring no conscious thought, such as washing up or polishing shoes, to create the inner-self, with happiness, expectation and excitement, and how to carry that free emotion throughout the rest of the day.
Food as meditation. Much of the problem of overeating has been that, for the whole of their life, most peoples’ emotions have been linked to things in the world or thoughts in the mind. Now, in the light of the earlier practice, reactive emotion can be seen in its free form and be healed.
A huge plate of raspberry pancake is one thing, the physical sensation of it satiating your body and the taste of it is something else, and the happy emotion (before the guilt starts) is yet another

separate thing. From now on, eating food becomes a dance with emotions. Can the emotion be felt _before_ the physical act of eating? If focused on while eating, rather than the food it’s in reaction to, can it be freed by using will/expectation and felt _instead_ of the usual guilt and self-hatred. If, in guilt, negative inner-self pictures arise, how to cure them by experiencing the emotion independently.
Chapter Five — The Buy More Food Diet
Most people who are overweight tend to eat main meals quickly. It takes time for a stomach which has become sufficiently full to send messages of satiation to the brain, thus too much is eaten. The cure for this is to eat _more_ food.
Well, maybe not to eat more, but initially to _buy_ more. The reader is urged to prepare a smallish amount of food and consume it thirty minutes before the main meal. It’s eaten, with full presence of mind, as a type of meditation, to switch focus from the food in the world and taste in the mouth, to the emotion it causes, with a view to freeing the emotion and allow it to be experienced separately from food.
It’s very easy to eat this small amount as no one is being denied beloved food, this is in addition to the main meal.
But, by learning to experience emotion separately from a cause, it can be extended beyond the period of eating — it’s attachment and dependency on food will be lessened. Come the main meal, it’s much easier to eat less because the stomach was satiated 30 minutes previously and has already sent a message of this fact to the brain.
Chapter Six — Facing the Demons
What exactly is going on when someone “just can’t” stick to a diet? What is the nature of this “hunger” which is given into? If this is a monster we’ve been grappling with for so long, it’s time to step back and have a thorough, direct and uncensored look at this.
But first, the more fun proposition of getting to know its opposite: satiation. But now, we’re really examining physical sensations in the body: _exactly_ where does it feel good? _Exactly_ how does it feel good? Obviously the strongest sensation is in the stomach, but if you expand awareness to the whole body, the welcome surprise is that the pleasant sensation of being full is also a subtle range of various sensations throughout the entire body. This is the much-coveted “experience of fullness”.
What is this “hunger” which enslaves and forces us all into submission and self-hatred? One morning, the reader is urged to have a small breakfast and an even smaller lunch, as early as possible. In the evening, dinner is prepared, but for 30 minutes, the sensation of hunger is observed. Obviously, it’s centered most strongly in the stomach, but it is, in actuality, subtler than the feeling of being full. By widening awareness it can be seen that it too consists of faint sensations throughout the entire body.
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet
13
So what’s the relevance of all of this? Ah, it leads to a method.
Have you ever watched a program on TV about head lice, and the longer it’s viewed, the more your head starts itching? Or maybe you find some huge spider on the sofa, and so take it outside, then return to the sofa… but somehow can still feel it now and again, crawling on your body. Yet each time it’s frantically slapped… there’s nothing there.
That’s right, the mind can influence sensations in the body. It’s possible to dance with these sensations. The same will/expectation which can consciously create thoughts, mental pictures and free emotions, can also create the physical sensations you were craving (rather than the food you thought they had to be in reaction to). Defeating hunger can become an effortless game. The full method is presented in this chapter.
Chapter Seven — Facing Deeper Demons
Overeating isn’t always a problem of being a slave to unexamined hunger. Sometimes too much of the wrong thing is consumed to change an existing emotion of misery. It isn’t the hunger that needs transforming, but the cause of the feeling. Overeating, even bingeing, can be either to change, even temporarily, a feeling of misery into enjoyment, sometimes, the act of eating itself, is being used to fuel self-hatred. This can’t be solved until we get past the body image and the root of the negative feelings.
The practice now presented gets to the root of the problem. Because of the technique of approaching food meditatively, people with this difficulty will have noticed the same repeating negative inner-self pictures, and will begin to have some map of what needs to be healed.
As already illustrated, a negative emotion of self-hatred, guilt or whatever it is that is causing this damaged relationship to food, exists reactively in the mind and radiates the relevant thoughts and pictures. But, just because it has always done this and seems to be attached to these thoughts, its true nature is free and independent. For the first time ever, turning right round and directly facing this terrible vagueness which has caused us so much pain, it can be seen for what it is, a transient energy that is separate from consciousness.
A method of meditation consciously recalls the painful images, hurtful scenes from the past, the way the body exists presently, imagined rejections etc. — and the is emotion freed into its independent form.
This independent negative emotion, after being faced and its vagueness comprehended, is then transformed into a positive external emotion. When self-loathing or guilt or whatever is causing the pain, are freed from their cause and seen separately and objectively, the feeling can be transformed into one of understanding and sympathy for all the misery this energy causes in the people all over the world. The focus shifts from a negative sense about the self, to a feeling of concern for other people.
Next, a forgiving stage if this if this emotion was caused by somebody else or mistakes in upbringing.

14
Lastly, the inner-pictures this emotion has been generating for so long are no longer fused together with possibility and expectation. Only the pure energy of emotion is observed, thus it doesn’t have any negative effect on the future. When this energy, rather than ran away from or expressed in binge overeating, is faced head-on for what is, not identified with any sense of self — although it still sometimes comes and goes (because we can’t stop human emotion, we can only stop being it), it has no hold over life and doesn’t radiate out mental pictures, it just _is_, and has no bearing on the lives we live.
Chapter Eight — Always Freedom
As with the previous meditation, or any meditation, the above is a practice to see the possibility of the way the mind can permanently become. Chapter eight begins to make this meditation practice the permanent form of mind. The obstacles to happiness are removed.
Sometimes, in the daytime, someone might stop, look, and realise that there’s a very strong negative emotion existing, of self-loathing or guilt; it’s in full swing and radiating all manner of negative mental pictures. Consciousness is so caught up in it that it isn’t easy to just let it go and practice the happiness habit or replace a negative inner-self picture with a positive one. Sometimes it’s hard to transform emotional negativity because it’s based on intellectual distortion. “_I feel disgusting because I am disgusting_”. Ways to transform repeating negative emotion include:
• Understanding the ten distortions of cognitive therapy, in conjunction with positive self-talk.
• Using the ridiculous to lessen a mental picture’s emotion, which is completely safe because it removes possibility.
• Using sensation in the body to anchor the focus in this world and out of the mind — an escape into reality.
• Visualisation to objectify and quell inappropriate emotion.
Also explained, how, once the feeling lessens, to transform each negative inner-self into its complete, positive opposite… then raise possibility, expectation and excitement in conjunction with these chosen pictures, and thus create a new future.
Chapter Nine — Beyond the Body
Using the techniques so far _will_ cause weight loss, but in a completely new way. This new way is paradoxical because, the more it works and the thinner the body becomes, the less is cared about the appearance of the body.
This method of weight loss essentially works by freeing emotions from anything they are in reaction to, and having them under conscious control. Yet the more we have this, the less anything in the world can be enslaving. Thus it’s now possible to step back and take a wider view of the
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet
15
situation. After examining the pressure society puts on everyone to have a perfect body, plus realising the independence of emotion and that someone with a perfect body, or any body, can be miserable or depressed, it’s time to take a more objective look at things.
For all of the struggles and problems, all of us were only ever looking for happiness. Now it’s understood that happiness isn’t essentially linked to any “thing”, including the body, focus on the physical self lessens and once we decide what is _real_ happiness in life, the same process of creation can be used to obtain it. Also included:
• How to uncover a life-purpose, and a mental sequence that can create this.
• A brand new method of dream interpretation to assist with this process, by specifically pointing out negative emotions needing to be released with the healing meditation, and positive new directions to take in life.
• How to perceive “ownership” as a concept, to avoid attachment and possession for the sake of possession, and acquire the things and life-circumstances which are truly desired.
• How to examine repeating situations in life, both positive and negative, to uncover previously unobserved inner-self pictures which has created them, then healing the negative and intensifying the positive.
Chapter Ten — Beyond Happiness
By learning to look at emotions and consciousness in this revolutionary new way, while creating happiness first, then a new body, it raises certain questions that go beyond happiness and the body. What is the nature of these vague emotions which are now being mastered? Exactly what is the consciousness that experiences them? Is happiness and unhappiness, positive and negative, always revolving in the world and mind, or is there some permanent state that we’re destined to achieve.
This happens naturally, when the self is continually freed from objects, situations, thoughts and emotions, one becomes curious as to exactly what this self is. For those who may be interested, this last chapter addresses these questions.
A basic look at psychology and the esoteric aspects of the world’s religions points to two possibilities, which may or may not, actually be the same thing. An ultimate state of consciousness is a natural progression that a satiated mind inclines towards when the conditions are right — and is either a kind of “finding the true-self”, or “extinguishing a false-self”. To realise the ultimate state is to realise the right conditions, and then to allow an unending peace to unfold naturally, without any effort on your part.
An explanation of the “three realisations”, which a mind that has learnt to observe emotions and the world separately, naturally achieves.
Then two gentle methods are presented, that the reader might experiment for themselves and learn that there’s ultimately more to life than the body, or even happiness itself.

Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet 16
Why the “no pain, no gain” philosophy which much of the west orientates itself on, is wholly wrong, and must, in fact, be completely reversed to “Pain, no gain, no pain, gain”….
…because we’re supposed to be happy.
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet 17
Introduction
I wonder how many diets exist? If you went through every magazine and book that has ever been published, every radio and TV program that has ever been broadcast and found a transcript for every speech that has ever been given — throughout all of this material, how many “new and revolutionary” diets have appeared? It must run into the millions. With all these great diets, it’s a wonder there’s still anyone overweight.
I remember seeing a book once, it was a comedy, A4 size. The cover was a parody of a woman’s magazine. In the sidebar, it said:
“Revolutionary new slimming technique:”
“The ‘Eat Less’ Diet”.
This is the trouble, isn’t it? There are so many clever diets, designed for people to feel full all the time, so more can be eaten of something with less calories. But if it’s as simple as this, why do people have such problems with it? Why is the whole thing surrounded by such self-hatred and guilt? Why do so many people, despite their best efforts, fail? Why aren’t these diets successful and cause happiness?
The problem is within. Really, the only diet that works is the “eat less” diet, and when we can’t change our habits, or feel deprived without a favourite food, then the problem is in the mind. When we make a decision (in he mind) to eat less, but then find ourselves not following the resolution in the world, what’s happening within?
First of all, the decision to become slim is made, thus there must be dissatisfaction with the body. So something is lacking in life and there’s a belief that if we were slimmer, it would be obtained. What’s lacking, something in the world, or is it a desired mental state or way of feeling? Maybe the
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet 18
thought is that with a slim body, then we would be more socially acceptable and have a wider circle of friends — so it’s a deeper and more frequent connection to other people which is desired, i.e. love.
Perhaps the problem is self-hatred. We look in the mirror and feel disgusted with ourselves. It’s felt that if we were slim, then there would be a feeling of OKness, a knowing that we are worthwhile in some way.
All the pain and effort we go through, this diet and that diet, and ultimately we are looking for various mental states, to feel a certain way within.
We close our minds and hate ourselves with each “failure”. We decide to eat only certain kinds of food, but then can’t resist some desired treat — and so have to endure all the following guilt and self-hatred. This is pain. It hurts, and so this has to be either endured or pushed away.
But these painful feelings are trying to be helpful. It might be discovered that ultimately we desire slimness to be more connected to other people. If we overeat and hate ourselves because of the appearance of our bodies, then the self-hatred and guilt feelings are a part of the mind that wants us to feel OK.
Obviously, I’m not suggesting that self-hatred and guilt should be welcomed. But they should be acknowledged for what they are, misguided attempts to achieve a desired way of feeling.
At the end of it all, what we want is to be happy. If you read this book, practice the exercises and don’t lose a single gram, yet learn to feel the feelings you were really looking for, I’ll be thrilled.
It’s true, with this book, anyone can transform emotion to become slim. It might be very hard to believe at this point, but once the desired weight is achieved– it shall be secondary to the way you begin to feel, all of the time, regardless of anything that exists in the world.
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet 19
Chapter One — Inner-Self/Future-Self
In a way, this whole book is about your body. It’s obviously an important issue to you (fair enough). Something you’ve never likely considered is that there are two of you.
Yes, that’s right. You have two bodies, and I’ll prove it. Imagine you’re at a party, talking to a friend. She says that she’s taken up parachuting as a hobby — and invites you to go on a jump this weekend. You consider it for a while and then say “Absolutely NO WAY!”
What happened when you “considered it for a while”? You pictured yourself up in a plane, trembling with fear, and then jumping out, screaming while disappearing into the clouds.
So there are two of you. There’s a physical body in the world that life is lived in, and there’s the body in your mind, the inner-self. I know what you’re thinking, “So what?”
But it’s so much more than a mental picture or daydream. Imagine yourself back at the party. Your friend asks you if want to do a jump with her. This is considered it for a moment. You imagine your inner-self up in the plane, laughing and joking with your friend, jumping out screaming (with joy), the huge flapping sound as the wind catches the opening parachute, then landing safely.
“Sure I’ll come, how much is it?”
Do you see this? The way the inner-self exists in your mind now, creates how the outer-self exists in the future.
When, at the party in the present, you see the inner-self in a possible future, terrified and hating the jump, then that decides the future for the outer-self, i.e. you aren’t going parachuting.
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet 20
Conversely, when at the party, you see your inner-self in a possible future, jumping out of the plane, having a great time, and landing safely — then this decides the future for the outer-self, i.e. you agree to go and now shall be doing a jump this weekend.
But surely it can’t be as simple as this: whatever the inner-self does in the present shall become the future for the outer-self. If this was true, then we could just think of ourselves as slim, radiant millionaires lazing about in mansions, living the life of the idle rich, and sit back waiting for it to happen.
Good point.
Possibility, Expectation and Emotion
Let me explain it this way. Imagine someone with an average job living in a modest flat. She’s happy enough, but often dreams about moving into a much bigger, more beautiful place. She buys interior design magazines and uses the photographs of beautiful decors as mental fuel for her frequent daydreams of living somewhere larger and more opulent.
One day, she finishes putting the house in order and lies down to rest for a moment on the sofa, engaging in one of the frequent daydreams: a large three bedroom flat in a good part of the city. She sees herself sitting on the wrought-iron furniture on the patio with a balcony and enjoying the view over the city. Inside, she mentally walks around and appreciates that art on the walls, the subtle light browns of the easy-furniture and the beauty of the overall design. Now, as so often before, the daydream inspires a happy feeling within.
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet 21
Suddenly, she recalls something from work. In the company magazine, there was a notice inviting applications for a training course, which if completed, makes one eligible to apply for a managerial position. This is now seriously considered. If the opportunity was pursued, then, having been at the same company for so long, there should be pretty good standing at the bank for a loan. A larger apartment in a better part of the city isn’t wholly out of reach, not if it was rented or on a lease basis.
She returns to the inner-self, but there’s something different about this mental sequence now. She imagines herself on the patio enjoying the view, strolling round the interior appreciating its beauty, as has been imagined so many times before. The difference now is the feeling. The mental sequence used to cause happiness, yet the emotion it now inspires is excitement.
Why? What has changed? Before, it was a daydream causing happiness, but then it suddenly became a possibility and caused excitement.
So, back at work, the course is successfully applied for and enrolled in. She picks up some leaflets from the bank to check the terms and interest rates. The dreams of living in a new apartment still often arise, but now they are always accompanied by excitement.
Half way through the management course it becomes obvious that not only does she like it but is also good at it. It will almost certainly be successfully completed, and the bosses are very happy with her progress.
She makes an appointment with the bank and starts talking to estate agents and interior designers.
At weekends and during other spare time, she still has the same mental sequences of the inner-self, but the emotion is much stronger, she’s very excited, because now it is not only possible but also expected.
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet 22
Do you see that? At first, it was a mental picture for fun, causing happiness but only as a daydream.
Then possibility was added. Ostensibly possibility was added by an event in the world, i.e. the possibilities the management course provided. But make no mistake about it, possibility exists and is realised in the mind. There has never been anything stopping her making plans to obtain a dream home.
In the mind, anything is possible. Right now, you can choose to have any thought that you want. You can think of an airplane, a flower, an atom or Brazil.
The first stage of her inner-self in the present becoming the outer-self in the future, was when possibility arose in her mind, transforming happiness into excitement.
This led to action in the world. But it was still a possibility at that stage, not definite.
When she decided, halfway through the course, yes, now it can really come about, then expectation arose in her mind, increasing the excitement, and causing further concrete action in the world.
Thus:
(Present) inner-self + positive dreams = daydreaming = happiness.
(Present) inner-self + positive dreams + possibility = excitement and a possible future.
(Present) inner-self + positive dreams + possibility + expectation = excitement and a definite future.
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet 23
This is the way we’ve manifested the lives we live, including our physical bodies. The inner-self often exists in our minds, sometimes as a daydream, sometimes as a becoming future. There are two bad things and one good thing. Bad number one, this inner-self is usually created unconsciously, according to past habits of thought. Bad number two, the inner-self can be vastly distorted. There are many slim attractive people who hate themselves and try desperately and miserably to diet all the time, when actually there’s no need to change eating habits because there’s nothing wrong with the outer-body, it’s the inner-body not looking so good, and mental habits that need changing.
The good news is that change is indeed possible. Just because the process of creation is usually unconscious doesn’t mean it has to be. Just because the inner-body is distorted by habit, that doesn’t mean it has to be either.
In the mind, out of an infinite possibility of having any thought, certain ones emerge by habit, but you can also consciously choose them.
True, there’s no such thing as a free lunch (and even if there were, it wouldn’t be good if you’re trying to lose weight). Change the inner-self to how you want to be, immerse the mental pictures in possibility and expectation — and it shall become your future. This is the truth, but it’s not quite so easy in practice.
First of all, the way your inner-self exists now at present, without your choice or design, is very ingrained. For the whole of your life these pictures of the inner-self have existed, and they keep on arising now, constantly, without being asked, and in a way that you didn’t ask them to be. To reign in the whole of the mind all of the time, to create the body (and future) you want, obviously isn’t going to be an instant, hey presto magic trick, it’s more like a sculptor with a large boulder, hitting pieces away bit by bit until a beautiful form emerges.
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet 24
Also, it sometimes isn’t easy to raise possibility and expectation if it’s never been there in the first place. For example, right now, create a mental picture of yourself walking on the surface of mars. This is effortless. But it can’t make you feel excited because you don’t believe it’s possible, thus it’s not expected. This is good and realistic.
But if you visualise yourself with the body you want, slim, fit, happy, living an abundant life — is it a daydream or a becoming reality? Does it make you excited, or do you not believe it possible at all?
So how do you raise possibility and expectation where there is none existing? How do you reign in the whole of the mind all of the time? Obviously, there’s no point simply resolving to do it, or it would be like every diet you’ve ever tried, i.e. broken.
A method is required. Firstly, a technique to consciously create a desired inner-self and be able to raise expectation and possibility. Secondly, once it’s possible to raise the emotion, we need to be able to catch the spontaneous inner-self as it arises, and replace it with the one we’ve consciously created. A mammoth task BUT, we have one huge advantage on our side. The essence of the whole thing is that to create a desired future, it’s necessary to have an inner-self existing in a way that causes happiness now. Once we manage to consciously create a new inner-self and can attach emotion each time it’s applied, this is replacing despondency, despair, self-hatred etc. with excitement and happiness. To practice happiness is fun. It isn’t only “happiness as a slimming tool” but also “happiness as a method to obtain anything desired”.
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet 25
Chapter Two — The Magic of Possibility
If you’re overweight and not happy with that, then it could be one of two problems. One, you are able to picture an inner-self as you would like to be, and possibility and expectation are present. Sometimes this exists spontaneously, like when you are resolving to follow a new diet or eat less in general, believing this is possible and feeling excited because it’s expected. The problem is on a moment-to-moment basis. Throughout the day the inner-self keeps on spontaneously existing, but not the one you want to be, it’s the habitual one, the one that causes self-hatred. Maybe a diet is broken with just a little forbidden dessert, but then a spontaneous inner-self (resembling an elephant) comes into being and causes self-hatred or dissatisfaction, because it exists with possibility and expectation — and of course, this is the way it’s been existing in the past, created the present and the way it lives in the present creates the future. Because you think this the majority of the time, it cancels out the occasional positive ways in which the inner-self has been created. Unhappiness in the present causes unhappiness in the future.
The other problem could be a total absence of both possibility and expectation. Whenever an inner-self is created of how you would like to be, it’s only ever a total and complete fantasy. It’s nice to think it, but there’s no way it could possibly cause excitement because you are not able to believe that there is any way that the outer-body could ever be like this. Without possibility and expectation, this happy inner-self always stays a daydream, it can never be the future.
So what to do, if possibility and expectation are wholly absent whenever this mental picture exists? If they are simply not present, then how can they be created?
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet 26
Free Emotions
There’s a fabulous, brilliant and excellent secret about emotions that very few people ever realise: they’re not linked to anything (if you don’t want them to be). It’s not immediately apparent because emotions are habitually experienced in response to some physical or mental situation, event or object.
You can see this yourself with incidents of emotional transference. Emotional transference is exactly what it says: an emotion linked to one thing, which then transfers itself to something else. For example, two old adversaries bump into each other in the street and have a screaming argument which leaves them both trembling with anger. Then thirty minutes later, one of them is at lunch. The salad is a tad limp and they end up screaming at the waiter. Usually they wouldn’t get so wound-up about such a trifling matter. The truth is that it’s not really about the salad. The angry emotion is already existing, inspired by the earlier meeting with their adversary, and now it’s attaching itself to something else, in this case, a limp salad.
Of course, it works conversely. When something good happens and leaves you in a great mood, the whole world seems a little bit brighter and it’s the positive that tends to be noticed.
But emotions aren’t only ever in reaction to things in the world, they can be in response to thoughts. If you want to you can choose to think of some happy thought, like a cherished memory from the past or an upcoming celebration in the future, the chosen thoughts inspire happiness in the present as a reaction.
So, the double conclusion is:
(a) Emotions aren’t indelibly linked to whatever inspired them.
(b) We can choose our thoughts.
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet 27
The question is: can we choose our emotions?
If emotional transference occurs spontaneously all the time, can it be used consciously? To put it another way, can the emotion be taken from one cause and be attached to something else, on purpose? Have you ever decided to “get something over with”, while you’re “still in a good mood”?
Imagine you’ve a much disliked, grumpy neighbour. Every morning they scowl at you and you scowl back. One morning a letter arrives saying you’ve won the lottery, so you rush off to work to give two weeks notice. The neighbour scowls at you as usual, but you are hugging and kissing them. Did the emotion from the lottery win override the usual scowl, did it transfer from one thing to another?
But is a situation actually needed to have an emotion (such as excitement at something being achievable)? Is every emotion always a reaction to something in the world or a thought in the mind? You’ve already seen that it’s possible to choose any thought you desire, and happiness can arise in response to it. Do you specifically need the thought? Is it possible to choose happiness, or any emotion, directly?
To answer that, we have to examine exactly what an emotion is. We know what things in the world are, because things in the world are so easy to see. For example, a car is a great big shinny piece of metal. In the mind, thoughts can be perceived, but it’s much harder because they’re so much less tangible. Right now, create a picture of a rose in your mind, how exactly does it exist? It’s kind of a vague inner-perception. If I ask, what’s 13+8? You say 21 (unless you went to my old school). Did the number two and the number one flash visually in your mind? No, it’s not likely that they did. The answer arose without mental pictures. There is a period of “mental calculation”, that very vague mental movement while you ruminate for an answer, then a kind of “pictureless
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet 28
knowing” arises: 21. We spend all this time “thinking” in our lives, and it creates so much of the world around us. Think of all the brilliant “thinkers” who changed the course of history. What do you “think” about them? Yet when observed directly, thinking is a very vague process indeed.
So what are emotions? If you separate a feeling from whatever it’s in reaction to… what exactly is it?
Try it now. Think of then best or the worst time from your past, something like the dog being run over when you were a kid, or graduating from university. Think about this and the emotion it caused in the past, until it causes the same emotion in the present. So in this example, inside your mind there are either mental pictures of the dog being run over and “sadness” existing, or there are mental pictures of yourself beaming in a university gown and “happiness” existing in you.
It’s already been seen that emotions are neither inherently nor indelibly linked to whatever they are in reaction to. If you look objectively into the mind, mental pictures or thoughts are one thing, emotions are another. The vagueness of mental pictures or pictureless knowings has already been observed– so now again, what exactly is an emotion?
If you’ve inspired “sadness”, don’t look at the mental picture in your mind that it’s in reaction to, look at the pure emotion. What is it, by itself? You might describe it as “A heaviness around my stomach”. OK, good try, but that’s a physical sensation. It can’t be “sadness” itself. The emotion that is sadness is one thing; physical sensations are another thing. If emotions were just physical sensations, then people who lose the sensation in their body because of a spinal injury or disease, would also stop feeling emotions — but they dont. Physical sensation is only a result of emotion, not emotion itself.
So, one last time, what is sadness, happiness or any emotion?
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet 29
It’s a shock, but emotions, the things that people really live for and which motivate all human activity, when perceived directly, are even less tangible than thoughts. The closest possible description would be something like: “a shadowy something in the mind”. Emotions are almost nothing. Their presence is generally known by the things they radiate rather than from themselves. So whenever feeling incredibly happy, the “incredible happiness” is barely existing, what is really being enjoyed are the things that radiate out of this happy feeling of being somehow uplifted — like happy optimistic thoughts, the smile on your face and performing joyful, positive actions.
But can you see how it isn’t linked to anything? If you use memories of the best or the worst time in your life, and then feel this emotion now, can you let the memory fade, as memories are apt to do, and focus on the very vague emotion, alone, in the mind.
This is the essence of the way it’s possible to obtain the body you want, or anything you want. Recall the lottery example: emotions are free. You can create the inner-self you want to be, attach possibility and excitement, (you might have to raise the feelings separately, independently from the thoughts initially as you are undoing a lifetime of habitual thinking) and it shall become the future. The first stage is to formally practice this as a kind of meditation, essentially as a practice session for the new way the inner-self can exist (by your choosing), all the time.
Once the desired inner-self pictures can be effortlessly created with possibility and expectation, stage two is to apply this throughout the day in a way that causes happiness now. Lastly, stage three is to learn to heal the spontaneous thoughts in the mind. To begin with, you can enjoy the happiness this new way of using the mind causes, but initially you’re up against a lifetime of programming and negativity. Sometimes, spontaneous thoughts of how you are (or think you are) arise with negative feelings of despondency and self-hatred, without being invited.
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet 30
The cure for this is to again realise the independence of emotions. You’re sitting at breakfast one day and indulge in a smearing of marmalade, then a picture of a huge naked you, looking at yourself in front of a full-length mirror is created (jumping up and down if you want to be really cruel) and a strong feeling of disgust and self-loathing arise with it. It can even be felt as sensations rising through the body, as it exists with negative possibility and negative expectation.
But is it possible to learn to see emotion in a free form, not linked to whatever inspired it. The mental picture of yourself is one thing, and the feeling of self-loathing is another, and it is observed by itself (sans the picture). By itself, it’s incredibly indistinct. How can something as vague as this be so painful? It’s a feeling of not being OK. However, remember that this wispy, painful feeling is a part of the mind that wants you to be happy, popular and accepted. It is continually creating these painful thoughts because it thinks this is the way to make you feel OK in yourself. No emotion lasts forever. Think of an unruly child pulling at your clothes for attention. If you notice them, they calm down. If you open to and fully accept this vague, misguided feeling, it will eventually fade, and one day be healed because it’s getting the acknowledgement it was looking for. It needed you to know that you want to feel accepted and OK.
The Meditation
Any meditation is essentially a practice for the way the mind will be used throughout the day. Initially it requires conscious effort, until it becomes an ingrained habit and happiness is a default. Hopefully you’ve decided you want to use your mind with positive inner-self pictures of the way you wish to become.
[
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet 31
So how do you wish to be? If you right now became your perfect weight, with all problems
solved and living a life you love — then what would an average day be like? Make a list of the
things you would like doing.
• Looking at myself in the mirror and feeling happy acceptance and a sense of
accomplishment.
• Being more popular and socially confident.
• Having more assertion and a sense of self-worth so I can progress further in my career and
make more money, which would allow me to move into a nicer place.
• Being comfortable enough to visit the health spa, undress in public and have an
aromatherapy massage, something I’ve always wanted to do but have been too embarrassed.
Now maybe it’s easy to think all of these things, to put the inner-self into these situations, but it’s
only a fantasy causing happiness as a daydream, but not excitement at a likely future, because deep
down this has never been believed possible. The first stage is to learn to attach possibility and
expectation to these pictures in a way that causes happiness and excitement now. Once this has
been learnt, you can begin to apply it throughout the day until it becomes an effortless habit. It’s
true, happiness can make you slim.
Let’s make up a fictitious example to show how this first stage works. A woman of around
twenty five say, who has a job she quite likes. It’s easy for her to make mental pictures of a slim
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet 32
inner-self, but weight has been a problem since childhood and the pictures only ever exist as a
daydream because she’s always been this weight, all her family are this weight, and although there’s
been many attempts at dieting — deep down she really always expected to only lose a little weight.
A mental picture of being slim is just a fantasy.
Work’s taking up a lot of time right now, so she’s decided to go to bed a little earlier each
evening to practice this. Also, long, relaxing baths are relished every weekend, and this is another
good time.
So she lies down in the bath or wherever this session is to be conducted. There’s no point
launching straight into pictures of the future-self she would like because there’s currently no
possibility or expectation existing, so they would only be daydreams. The trick is, in the beginning,
to raise the possibility and expectation separately.
This is how. The following weekend her sister is coming to introduce the man she’s just moved
in with. The sisters have always got on well but haven’t seen each other for a long time. Our subject
is a generous, skilled host who has organised the dinner and is very much looking forward to it.
So now, lying in the bath, the coming dinner is imagined. She creates mental pictures of how the
dinner might be, and watches her inner-self having a good time in the future, until happiness and
excitement are felt now, in the present.
This is continued for some time, but remember, the emotion this inspires isn’t happiness at an
escapist fantasy, but excitement at a possible and expected future. Because of this, once focus on
the mental pictures is firmly established, she looks towards this vague emotion itself. She looks
into her mind and comprehends that the mental pictures now created and the emotion are two
different things. This is seen because the mental pictures are ever changing, coming and going with
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet 33
a gap in-between them, but the vague emotion, the wispy something/nothingness in the mind, is
constant.
Eventually, a realisation dawns: it’s possible to create the emotion in the mind in just the same
way a thought can be created in the mind. How does she create a mental picture? How do you?
After deciding to picture the inner-self serving aperitifs and making small talk, how exactly does
that thought become created? She just looks into her mind, and kind of wills/expects it to be created
— and it is.
Did you ever notice that? It’s easy to create an inner-world. You can instantly create a scene in
the mind, with mountains, a crystal clear sparkling lake and blue skies. You choose to create this
thought and there it is. But how exactly is it created? Try it now.
This is very, very subtle isn’t it? It seems almost instantaneous. The moment you decide to create
the mental picture, it’s there. But if you think about it, it can’t be instantaneous, can it? The decision
to create the mental picture is one thing, the mental picture itself is something else. It can’t be the
decision that creates the mental picture as they are different things existing at different times. There
must be a separate stage of creation between the decision and the result.
Because it’s so automatic and lightening fast, it’s very hard to observe, but if you minutely
observe and play in your mind long enough you will see that there is a slight effort of either willing
it to be created, or expecting it to be created, depending on how you look at it.
So this is what our subject realises. She knows how to instantly create a thought because she
knows what a thought is. But after having learnt to see an emotion all by itself, she also knows
what one is and can thus create it the same way. It’s true, emotions don’t need a reason, they can
just be. The same act of will/expectation that creates the vagueness which is a thought can also
create the vagueness that is an emotion.
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet 34
Looking into her mind, at the excitement and expectation which now exist, by themselves (after
imagining the coming dinner) the mental picture is allowed to fade and focus inclines towards the
vague emotion. Will/expectation is used to intensify it. It takes some time to learn to do this
because, as with most people, emotion has never been experienced in its free form, it’s always been
reactionary. But it is possible, and eventually she manages it.
This is the trick: now it is time for the introduction of the first consciously chosen inner-self
picture while expectation and possibility are already existing.
She imagines waking up in the morning, in a new and opulent house, and walking to the full-
length mirror to look at herself, at the slim, firm body she’s decided to create.
At this point, because of a lifetime of habitual thinking, the positive emotion starts to rapidly
fade. Mental pictures like this have never existed in her mind with possibility and expectation
before, and so this is a natural reaction. It’s OK because this is exactly what is being retrained here,
and it’s now possible because the independence of emotion has been both observed and mastered.
In the beginning, the habitual mind is so ingrained that it’s almost impossible to have this slim,
happier inner-self and positive excitement existing at the same time. She loses the emotion and so
drops the mental picture and wills/expects the emotion to be recreated in her mind, then again
inspires the mental picture of herself in the mirror, again and the emotion recedes.
Recall the image of a sculptor chipping away at the granite. It takes time, but enough hits and
one day the form is immortalised in stone. Now an important point, it’s time to move onto the next
stage, but she doesn’t do so until this emotion has been simultaneously experienced in conjunction
with the mental picture. So you might even call this an “emotional pause point”. The happiness of
now is creating the future.
Happiness as a Slimming Tool — J. Lowet 35
Next she imagines herself at the health spa, expensive and plush, with friendly staff. She strips
off and uses all her senses, smells the aromatherapy and feels the soft oiled hands of the masseur
gently relaxing her muscles. She’s always dreamt of having the confidence to do something like
this, but because this is just the beginning, it’s still a happy fantasy. It’s necessary to drop the
picture from time to time to will/expect possibility and excitement independently, then when she
reinspires the mental picture, the emotion recedes. So there is a dance, initially, between emotion
and picture, but eventually they merge and are experienced simultaneously. For the first time in her
life this dream is considered possible. When the emotion is sufficiently intensified, she then moves
on to the next stage — and so on, until the positive emotion has been raised with an inner-self
picture of each goal she’s decided to create.
Remember, each time this is achieved, she’s already halfway to this becoming the future.
Obviously the other half is learning to apply this consciously chosen, positive inner-self throughout
the day, making it a habit, and to heal negative emotions that have been spontaneously creating the
past inner-self and thus the present she now lives.
But even at this stage, make no mistake about it, the happiness and excitement of her inner-self
in the present, is the future she will become.

I did this one ages ago, but only as a line drawing. It’s two dark for colour, I wouldn’t be able to fix the graphite properly. Today I finished a black line drawing from TIME MAGAZINE. I’m going off my coloured pencils. I prefer more graphic / contrasting black/whites. Well. whatever. Yours

Dear Anne, How are you? No reason for this card really, other than I’m still seperated from the Internet. The sun’s come out and its really hot. Actually I’ve seen a promising looking computer centre across the road from this “Blossom Garden” restaurant so I shall go and check it out. The restaurants here all close for the afternoon.
Tommorow I finally pick up my Visa, I’ll probably leave the next day. It’s been a trying time, though not entirely without fruit as I’m writing my last web-essay here and that’s been stalled for ages, also a new project is slowly taking _crossed out: ?form_ shape.
Yesterday I was so bored I sewed on all the missing buttons on my shirts. I’ve meant to do it for ages. I still use that small grey sewing kit you sent, do you recall it? Well, then I went to bed but as I was falling asleep I was suddenly hit with the idea of how I could use the safety-pin in it as a hinge to fix my broken umbrella. I got up at 1am. tried it and it worked perfectly.
And these are the strange things that happen when a man is sober too long.
Have a Nice Day. J (PTO)

Just so you know, the promising looking computer centre was out of business. Not surprising, no one here can use a computer, including the people who own them. There aren’t even computer books.

Dear Anne,
I did this one twice. Once in Hikkadewa in black pen and that looks good but then I did a coloured pencil yesterday and it looks awful. I think there are too many colours, also I drew it in graphite pencil first and I think that darkens it. I now know coloured pencil rubs out easy so there’s no need to draft in pencil first.

J.S. Lipton,
1st January 1992
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to enclose my manuscript “Practical Clairvoyance” which I am hoping may be considered as a commission.
As you can see from the synopsis it is a practical “doing” book, unlike any other on the market because it’s gleamed mainly from my own investigations into this subject.
The book would be aimed at the countless people who each year buy the divination material on offer, most of whom either don’t have time or inclination to learn endless lists of possible meanings or if they do because there is no method of guarenteed mind development end up with not much more than a parlour game.
If you could please find time to read the enclosed material I am sure you would see the general idea and sales potential of my book. I have been practicing divination since I was at school and at one time worked as a tarot reader. During my studies into magick, especially the early Victorian English establishments like the Servants of Light and others, I pieced together this method of development which I have taught to other people and is unique because it is progressive and will work for anybody who undertakes it. Most of all it does not involve staring at a crystal : it is FUN! because the initial results can be obtained very rapidly.
I cannot explain enough in this short letter and feel my idea is better explained in the enclosed material. If you could find time to read it I shall look forward to your reply.
Thank you for your consideration.
Yours faithfully,

PRACTICAL CLAIRVOYANCE

J.S. Lipton,
INTRODUCTION
Surprise, surprise, another book on divination! Perhaps you’re thinking of buying this one to add to a growing collection of defunct attempts or just trying to pick a first, I suppose you’ll want to know what’s so good about this one?
First of all, why are you looking for a book on fortune telling? Do you want to read eighty thousand words of philosophical debate on divinatory history, or perhaps you want to learn to do it? If the latter then how do you propose is the best way? Buy a book that lists the meaning of each card/rune ect. and then gingerly throw some spreads and look up each meaning, ending up with a series of dis-jointed and probably contradicting interpretations, NO! you want to learn to do it “properly”. You want to know by memory, the exact meaning of each card so you can throw a spread and let the future unfold in your mind as fast as the cards do. Perhaps you’d like to experience the quickest way humanly possible to make new friends, become an instant centre of attraction and appear exotic, mysterious and interesting, by mentioning, at any social gathering, those four magic words that haul people in like fish caught in nets?
“I can read palms.” Try it and see! If you say this amidst any crowd what do you guess is the first thing that everybody turns to ask you? Ofcourse while you’re having all those eager palms thrust towards you it would be very inappropriate to whip out a book and look up each meaning as you go along, imagine it!
So unless you’re a gypsy and have it drummed into you
from birth or you’re a good liar you are going to have to sit down and memorise list after list of cards; runes; lines before you even begin. Perhaps you’ve already tried it this way and found it rather tedious, well there is an easier way. In the next short passage you’ll learn,as an example, to memorise all the possible meanings of the marriage line on a person’s palm. Just think how long it would take you to memorise this from a long list in another book. To show you what I mean I want you to read the story below and visualise it. See it as though it is happening in your mind as large as life, just as though you were actually watching it for real. See the sights, smell the smells ect. Make it as real as possible.
You’re in a church watching a bride and groom getting married. As they walk up the aisle the wedding march is played. You notice a white line (like in a road) in the centre where they are walking. You note their smiling, obviously in love faces. As they reach the vicar the bridegroom is distracted by a sight behind him at the entrance to the church. He turns to see a young woman there, waving and beckoning to him. He looks between this “other woman” and his fiancee for a while and after some deliberation, walks of to join her. As he walks back down the aisle you see that the white line has now been joined by a wavy one adjacent to it. They leave, rapidly followed by the crying bride to be. As the shocked congregation rise to leave, the stunned vicar exits the church and waits outside, glancing nervously
at his watch, waiting for the next couple. After a while his nervous twitching becomes unbearable and he walks down a nearby path to the beach. Coming to the shore he finds a bride calling out to the strange sight of her groom out surfing on the waves, obviously oblivious to the time. Having now had enough of this the vicar catches the young man’s eye and angrily points at his watch. He comes [inserted above: ashore and they walk back] , the groom looking particually apologetic.
Back in the church the new guests are waiting and the vicar jogs up to be in place. The couple wait at [inserted above: the entrance] for the wedding march to begin. When it does they walk down the aisle with a, as before, single white line, [inserted above: though] every so often they have to step across little lines of piled coins placed diagonally across the line, a bit like the way a scar looks when it’s been stitched. At the end of the aisle the floor rises slightly into a ramp taking the white line with it and once the couple have negociated this last obsticle the marrage goes ahead and all is well, until at the end when they walk back to a table by the far wall where a drink is waiting. There is only one glass and they both inadvertently pick it up at the same time and argue over it. She ends up winning and he prods [inserted above: her] with a fork in revenge. Notice the way she winces. The vicar comes down the aisle to join the now assembling guests and is surprised to find as he walks along the line that it is intermittently broken and in the gaps are small maps of various countrys. He goes on and joins the party for a while. Everybody stands eating and talking until they are interupted by a whirling sound. The couple walk out to a waiting helecopter and climb on board to start their honeymoon. Lastly the scene cuts to a desert island. There the couple are dropped off to
to a desert island. There the couple are dropped off to a waiting hut, they enter, but as soon as the door is closed all you can hear are the screams of their rowing.
There, just visualising that wasn’t too hard was it? So how does this help you remember the meanings of palmistry? Well if you look at the diagram you’ll see that the marrage line is a small line on the right hand, under the little finger and above the long line at the top of the palm horizontally (heart). A straight line shows a happy marrage (remember?) A wavy line next to it shows an affair which breaks the union (the other woman waving and the wavy line on the floor). A single marrage line which begins wavy and ends up straight shows a person who fears the commitment of marrage or settling down, but this only delays the marrage (man waving surfing over the waves to be married later). Small diagonal lines crossing the marrage lines shows obsticles, often of a financial nature (stepping over the coins). A slope towards the fingers shows general obsticles (ramp). A fork at the end of the line shows that person will suffer due to their partner (prodded by a fork). An island on the line (like a bubble) shows the co-habitation will be threatened at that point (see if the line continues to ascertain if the marrage will survive). Intermittent small breaks in the line shows the couple will be seperated at those points due to travel.
Now how would you rather become a palmist, in days by merely visualising like this (which you probably do anyway without purpose to daydream), or by learning endless lists by heart like this?
_MARRAGE LINE_
1/ Straight – Happy marrage.
2/ Wavy line accompanying – _crossed out: Infidelity_
3/ wavy, then straight line – Fear of commitment, then O.K.
4/ Small diagonal lines crossing – Obsticles, probably of a financial nature.
5/ Slant towards fingers – General obsticles.
6/ Island – Co-habitation threatened.
7/ Ending in fork – Suffering due to partner.
If you don’t beleive how easy it can be look forward to the passage on P. * to memorise the meanings of the minor arcana (40 cards included). For example there are only two passages to learn an entire pack of tarot cards.
Not only is this the easiest, quickest and most enjoyable way to become proficient in the mantic arts, but also included is information detailing how to develop yourself in the mysteries of that “unobtainable” art of skrying (using a crystal ball). All books explain how, unless born with remarkable powers, you must sit for hours to “develop” them. In fact, you are already clairvoyant now. If you think about a person who sits like this for development , when they have completed their training there is nothing different about them physically and neither has their brain changed, but now they can see clairvoyant images. What they’ve really trained themselves to do is to see images that were always there but they could never see before. It’s a bit like learning to remember your dreams regularly. If you learn to do this you don’t learn how to dream, you always do that, you only learn to look at [inserted above: them] and remember them. I have studied and documented this art. With a few years experimenting, much hard work and

by keeping a “clairvoyance diary”, using it to enter each vision in , I’ve watched each event come true in my life (extracts included). Staring at a crystal each day is the slow way to develop yourself and it only works for some people. Once you know how to do it properly it only takes about a month. Sitting staring at a crystal is a bit like trying to lift a large dumbell, if you try for long enough you will probably do it, but it will take daily effort, for a long time not even being able to move the weight at all. The better way to do it is to start with small dumbells and move up in stages to your target weight. I am absolutely sure I’ve mastered a system of development anyone can use. The method I’ve developed WILL work [inserted above: for] you WILL learn to see visions in a crystal/mirror ect. It’s also an easy and fun method of development. If you buy this book, read the first chapter and practice it’s contents you will be able to skry in a crystal ball, The training will start tonight when you WILL see clairvoyant images. Tonight you will be able to see the way the brain presents waking images and you will see them almost immeadiately, and after a month you will be able to see them in a crystal. Not only that, but what you see will be the future.
JUst think, buy this book and in a month you’ll be able to skry (in other words, clairvoyant), and will know by heart a couple of mantic arts at least, including astrology if that interests you, an art that would usually take a year or longer to learn the multitude of possibilitys. If you’re still not sure weather to buy this book or not, put it down, walk round the shop for a while, look at some
novels, browse through some thrillers, marvel at the endless lists in other “divination – how to” books and then ask yourself: if, on a friend’s hand, you saw a marrage line interupted by an island, what could you tell them about their future? If you can answer that then buy this book, for fun, for a living, to help people or just for the hell of it.
CHAPTER ONE : CLAIRVOYANCE
You bought it! Now I suppose you’re wondering what you have to buy to go with it? Well not much really, or nothing if you don’t want to. Probably the best thing to do is to read this chapter on clairvoyance and then read through the methods of divination as they occour, seeing which system appeals to you. It’s unlikely you’ll feel an empathy with all of them. As this chapter deals with clairvoyance you’ll need something to look into, though not necessarily a crystal ball, as you’ll read later I discovered quite by accident, the best surface for my personal faculty is a plain white piece of paper.
CLAIRVOYANCE
There’s probably more rubbish written about this subject than any other, mostly by people who either can’t do it themselves or who have the knack but don’t know how to give it to you because they learnt it spontaneously or have always been able to do it. I stumbled onto clairvoyance by accident, but with aroused interest began experimenting. I theorised on the actual process of clairvoyance and by keeping a clairvoyance diary I could check the validity of visions in an objective, scientific kind of way. I’m sure people out there will correct me if I’m wrong but I am fairly certain I’m the only person to discover the actual mechanics of clairvoyance and to develop this staged method of teaching it. To show you how to do it I’ll start at the beginning of my own development.
I love the cinema in the afternoon, usually where I go there are only a couple of other people in to watch the first showing. Also, with this paticular cinema I’ve never grown tiered of my mother telling me how she went there in the 60’s to watch the Beatles play, though I do find it hard to imagine her as a screaming teenager. Anyway, over the years I’ve developed the habit of spending my free afternoons there. This particular afternoon I came in late just as the advertisments were finishing and the interval about to take place. As I sat down the music stopped, the curtains opened and the lights came on very slightly. I think they had a problem with the projector because I’m sure I heard a commotion coming from the room above me. I looked around the twilight cinema waiting for the film to begin and eventually my eyes came to rest on the now visible screen. It was a large white rectangle and had like green stage lights shinning softly onto it, making it stand out from the darkness. As I sat there and stared there seemed to be movement over the screen, like lines moving around it. Suddenly I found myself witnessing the image of a postman walking down a street and up to a front door where he delivered a letter, as he walked away I realised it was my front door. I sat dazed for a while, until I jumped as the Pearle and Dean music started and the censorship certificate now filled the screen. I did’t pay much attention to the film that day and as soon as I got home I set about re-creating the situation with a desk lamp, coloured bulb and large piece of white card. After a few days of sitting and trying to see something I realised another approach was necessary, though I couldn’t think of what it was and was generally stumped.
A few days later I was in bed, going to sleep. As I drifted off I focused my eyes on the blackness on the insides of my eyelids. As I lte there and watched I realised there seemed to be some kind of movement there, just like on the cinema screen. I tried, as before, to stimulate a vision and it worked. I was falling asleep watching images dancing on the insides of my eyelids. I had bought some books on the subject because of my now aroused interest and had already made a “magic mirror”. To learn to use this was slightly harder, but the same principle. Sitting there staring into it I was able to see moving shapes which I could use as the starting point for a vision. I began a diary of everything I saw as well as drawing pictures of each entry, After a while (and with the benefit of retrospect) I realised that what I was seeing was coming true; I’d developed clairvoyance. The extracts below show typical examples :-

I can’t beleive it on the first attempt. I looked into the mirror for about three minutes when the whole thing clouded over and there was a flickering light coming from the bottom of the mirror. It was the type you seal letters with. It was pointing down as though it was being used. Then it disappeared and was replaced by a cut diamond that was spinning round on it’s point. After this I saw a white triangle inbetween periods of nothing. Then I saw a figure that could have been myself, sitting with knees pulled up to the chest and held in place by the hands. Then (and this is the amazing bit) I saw someone (who I thought at the time was me) approaching the door with a large envelope. I watched this for about thirty seconds until I was interupted by the postman delivering letters (in real life). When I’d cleared up I went to the door and saw on the floor the envelope I’d just seen in the mirror!!! When I opened it I found it was from an occult school I have written to to see if I can apply to join. On the cover there were two triangles just as I’d observed clairvoyantly, except on the letter they were orange and not white. The triangles were at the bottom of the paper, in the centre of a diagram of a crystal!! My God, I can’t beleive it! Only two things are wrong. The envelope delivered was slightly smaller than the one in the mirror and one of the triangles was upside down on the letter whereas in the mirror they both appeared as upright.

The vision started by seeing a cloud dotted with pin-pricks of light. Then I saw a large propeller turning round, then I saw a large open book with a black circle super-imposed over it. Someone was reading the book. I saw somebody being knighted then I saw two people, one whispering to the other one, that was too the left of the mirror. Then I saw a woman holding a box against her chest. She gave something to another figure who took something square out of the box and they both stood talking over it. Then I saw the masonic symbol of a set-square and compass, with a triangle above them. Then I could see someone holding a triangle up in the air, I was looking from behind them and I could see that they were holding a wand. Then I saw myself sawing wood. Then I saw the book VERY clearly; it was open with writing on it. Someone looked up to the sky with a telescope, they looked all around, holding it with both hands. Then I could see two people shaking hands with a large triangle super-imposed over the back of them. (whole vision very clear).
This vision took about a couple of months to come true (which is the closer to the norm). At the time of seeing this vision I was just finishing a book and was skrying to see what the result would be when it came back, that is to see weather it would be accepted or not. I had received a letter just before Christmas telling me my book had gone through an initial reading and was being passed to the editor: I would be notified in the new year of a desision. That was as far as I had got to publication at that time and wanted to know the result. Almost exactly two months later I got a response from the publisher. Even though it was Febuary I remember the day as a beautiful sunny one. I did’t wake up until ten and was just coming down the stairs when my friend called round to see me. After we had had coffee we walked to the park. We sat in “The Old Oak” café, looked at some caged birds and spent the remaining morning sitting under a tree enjoying the sun. I also remember we were playing a game. Everybody had had the same idea as us that day, to come out and enjoy the rarity of the weather. Every so often, as people walked past, we would pick an unsuspecting “victim” and see if we could barrage them with our thoughts telepathically, to make them do things such as turn and look at us, pick up a piece of litter, take their coats off ect. We got back a little after midday and as soon as I recalled my vision I wrote this entry in the diary:-
Date : Sunday 24th Febuary 1991
Result :-
On friday I got a letter back from the publishers, it said no. The reason that I’m writing this is that on the same day I received a large parcel with a book in it that I had sent off for last september and forgot about.
The large circle must have meant no/rejection. The masonic symbol was because the book that did arrive had it on the cover. The two people that were there in the vision was because a friend had spent the day with me and was there when I opened it, though he did’t hug me. AMAZING.
I suppose the hugging could have been symbolic of him comforting/encouraging me when I got the rejection. The
book in real life was about 2 by 3 ft. big, in the vision it seemed larger. Looking back now over a year later I can see how more has also come true. The book was about (ofcourse) occultism. It required you to make a “triangle of manifestation” which is a triangular piece of wood on which you place a crystal and then use ritual magic to raise a spirit from any grimoire. A few months later I did indeed saw wood to make a triangle, also I made a wand for the same purpose. I’m not sure what the person being knighted meant, perhaps it symbolised an achivement I was aiming for. The only vision I can’t place is the two people shaking hands over a triangle. I tend to keep my occult life to myself and never told anybody what I was working on, especially this friend because they “lost their faith” by the time I started and was very critical of this kind of thing. Perhaps it shows us both at the park playing mind games with people. I’m sure you’ll see from this example the importance of keeping a diary.
I can’t say exactly how clairvoyance works, but I have a fairly good idea. I became interested in the occult many years ago primarily through the study of the dreams and for the last five I’ve kept a diary (yes, another one) of all of them. I use it to study the workings of my sub-conscious in a kind of a psychoanalysis kind of way, but occasionally I’m amazed at how a dream will come true to the letter. Once I dreamt of a person whom I met weeks later. In the dream this person had goat’s hooves like the devil, he also tried to attack me. I foolishly ignored the warning only to wish weeks later that I hadn’t. I suppose I was so fascinated at meeting this man I had to let events takes place as they did to “test” the dream (very silly).
Occult theory goes that there are a number of planes of which this one (earth) is the last result. On the highest plane there are vaugue ideas and a fine type of matter which gradually comes down the planes, becoming denser and denser until it solidifies as actul matter on this earth plane. Now take anything on this earth plane eg. Beethoven’s 5th symphony. To begin with it started as a vague idea in the back of his mind, gradually it gathered form as the tune began to build in his head, eventually he wrote it down and solidified it on the earth plane. It’s the same with anything that exists or happens here. Once the motor car was a vague idea in the back of Henry Ford’s mind, available in black, black or black. Now if you beleive in Carl Jung’s notion of the universal mind this means that the world/plane where these ideas come from isn’t the inside of an individual subjective mind, but the same place, linked by a kind of telepathy/common bond by which we are all linked. So if Ford hadn’t invented the motor car it would have filtered down into somebody else’s mind and became solidified. Recently you’ve decided to become interested in fortune telling and you’ve decided to buy this book (well done). This interest must have begun as a vague notion in the back of your mind. If you’d met someone who had that strange “gift” of clairvoyance they could have looked into that strange “place” where ideas begin to which they would be linked and read what was about to come down into your life. There is also scientific evidence that we are all linked in this way. I remember reading of a group of scientists who took three lucid dreamers (people who know they’re dreaming when they are and can control them, go where they want ect.). The dreamers had never met before and were sent to sleep in seperate labs. Each was given a seperate codeword and told that when they began to dream they were to go to a certain place and give each other their codewords. When they woke (and still not meeting) two of the dreamers could tell the scientists each others words and both agreed on the contents of the conversation they had in the dream that night, they had waited in the dream for the third person but he hadn’t turned up (reported by both of them seperately), the third one reported he hadn’t achived lucid dreaming.
When we are awake in this here/now existence we are here on the earth plane, but when we sleep we step up to a higher plane, closer to the source of original ideas and hence the future. I suppose with creative visualisation one implants such an image of the future so it comes true rather than let random events take place. With clairvoyance you see while you’re awake, which enables you to rationally interpret them and also ask specific questions.
DEVELOPMENT EXERCISES
The first thing you need to do is to stimulate this imagery, which is always there, only now you’re going to consciously look at it. The best way to learn this initially is with tattvas. These are various shapes representing the elements: a red square; blue circle; white cresent moon; yellow square. To make them it is best to use coloured card stuck down on a black background so they are as bright as possible, sized about 4″/4″ should do. Every day for a week look at each card in turn, in a well lit room, and mentally count to sixty: don’t move your eyes from the centre of the shape. After sixty seconds close your eyes and focus on the after image on your eyelids, I’m sure you’ll have done something like this before. You’ll find it will slightly disappear, only to come back, repeating each time until it finally fades away. For now, that’s it. All you’re doing is getting used to focusing on imagery on the inside, for now putting it there, but this will pave the way for your sub-conscious to present its own pictures later when it’s got used to the fact that you’re now paying attention to it. Like when you first start noting your dreams, you suddenly start remembering them even when you weren’t trying.
For the next week do exactly the same thing but don’t close your eyes after looking at the shape, after 60 seconds look straight onto a bright piece of white paper. Again, focus on the image mentally, watching it come and go as many times as you can. When it does disappear try to make it come back with your mind, project/visualise it to see if you can make it return.
For the next two weeks stop doing the tattvas and move onto the next stage. As you fall asleep each night look into the blackness of your closed eyelids. There won’t be any shapes there this time but you will see something. On the insides of your eyelids there’s not a uniformed blackness, there’s patches of light and dark that seem to be moving about. Now from the odd curved line or light, try to see a picture there. It defies description but you’ll see what I mean when you try it. Rather like the psychology test blo where you have to tell the doctor what you think the ink blot is. Say you see a curving line downwards and decide it’s a telephone, fill in the picture using the lines already there; this is very hard to explain. On your eyelids you’ll see a vague shape, probably moving, you decide what it is and fill in/finish off/ complete the shape with your imagination. This will all be fine until your mind realises what you are doing. As you fall asleep at night the barrier that usually divides the conscious and the sub-conscious drops and you can see it’s images easier. This is why you dream while asleep and not awake. You’re now learning to see such images while wide awake. Some people have a stronger barrier than other and some people say it’s genetically predetermined. Once we all could see these things. How dense your barrier is depends on how much you were taught to close it during your upbringing. Luckily you can learn to open it consciously.
After a while of projecting shapes into pictures by projecting your own images via your imagination you will suddenly realise that the images you are looking at are now as real as in waking life and require no imagination at all! You’ll be looking at a barrage of images, life-like as in the waking world, that seem to come from nowhere, they need no though from you. Do this for two weeks, but don’t get carried away, it’s dreamy hypnogogic imagery, not the future, to see that you’ll need the last stage.
After only thirty days training the next step is really full clairvoyance. Set up whatever it is you want to skry with: sand; crystal ball or I would recommend a magic mirror as in appendix one. Perhaps experiment with a few surfaces
to see which one suits you. Dim the lights, I use a completely dark room with a single candle. Now sit and relax, looking into the crystal/mirror. The best thing about the mirror I’ve shown you how to make is that looking into it is exactly the same as looking into your closed eyelids: a bit like staring into space. Don’t focus on the actual surface of the mirror, but peer into the black depths. Hopefully you’ll have arranged the candle so that it doesn’t reflect directly on the surface to distract you. As you sit there you’ll realise that there are shapes/patterns moving about in the depths, exactly when you did the nightly exercise, by now your mind will have got the hang of it and know exactly what you want it to do. You should find that the shapes will turn into pictures (make sure you’re properly relaxed). Help a bit with you’re imagination if your mind needs some extra “tuition”, but you’ll soon find, as before, that the images take over and that you’re now skrying.
Remember to keep records in which it may be useful to note the phase of the moon. To begin with your mind will probably be giving you hypnogogic imagery but it will soon show you what you want. You’ll only know how successful you are if you keep a diary which you can refer back to retrospectively. You will also learn exactly “how” you see things. I mostly see things literally, but I understand some peoples’ minds work in a more symbolic way. Also you can test such ideas such as the further back an image appears the longer it will take to occour and vice-versa. As for the phase of the moon, some authoritys say it’s harder to skry when the moon’s waning rather than waxing. I find personally that I have no trouble skrying when the moon’s waning but the imagery is minimally less reliable, I think the real affects of the moon are minimal; but you can test that for yourself now! If you ever lose a vision make sure you’re properly relaxed because the barrier that usually stops you seeing such things lowers as your tension does.
There, the first time ever a structured, sensible and promised method of development has been given, based on personal experience and understanding. Better than sitting for six months staring at a crystal. You can only make it work if you DO it. This is your clairvoyance for you to use. Experiment, find out what is best for you: Go to it!
CHAPTER TWO
In this chapter you’re going to memorise the whole of a pack of tarot cards, that’s actually seventy eight. I’m using the traditional interpretations because the tarot is undoubtedly based on this system, a glyph with ten spheres in four worlds which are represented by the minor arcana (40) and 22 paths connecting them (22 major arcana). For the tarot to correspond so perfectly with the “tree of life” must be more than mere coincidence.
I’m not going to go into detail here about storing the cards and spreads ect. We’ll do that later but I would like to recommend that you buy a fairly traditional pack. I use the Morgan-Greer though I also have the Rider-Waite and use the Golden Dawn edition ritually. Which ever pack you like personally will do, but I’m not particularly impressed with some of the modern/liberal interpretations, like Alice in Wonderland! ect. I’ve even heard of one pack based on the Disney charactures.
The way you memorise these is up to you, I think a good idea is to read the pathworkings onto tape and play it, lying down, eyes closed. Remember to visualise in complete detail/reality, with smells and sounds ect, like you are actually there. It should only take a few days to memorise them. When you come to do some readings make a note of any cards you forget by underlining the passage in which the interpretation occours and try to visualise it “harder”. For example, if you remember all the cards but keep forgetting the four of penticles you will see from the passage that will see from the passage that it’s image is a throne with a penticle on. To remember it “harder” see the king sitting on it, ordering people about with his EARTHLY POWER, see the fine gold, touch it, smell the leather ect. Anything to make it more real and fix it in your mind.
NUMBERS
The minor arcana are numbered 1-10 in 4 suits: penticles; cups; wands; swords, each representing an element: penticles-Earth; Cups-water; Wands-air; Swords-fire. This is easy to remember because penticles are also known as coins, which are mined from the earth, cups hold water. Wands are made from branches once held up high in the air and swords are forged from fire. Each of the numbers 1-10 had an image that looks like it, for example the four of penticles is a chair/throne with a penticle on it. The first thing to do is to remember the pictures for the numbers 1-10, which shouldn’t be too difficult.
1= A candle.
2= Swan
3= A person with very fat cheeks
4= Chair
5= hatstand
6= Tadpole
7= Fishing rod and line
8= Snowman
9= Pipe
10= Bat and ball
If it helps you could make them into their own little story to help you remember. The aces and court cards and memorised differently, I’ll explain later. In the following visualisation I have included the meanings in brackets, this is so you can read which image is for what. There’s no need to speak the interpretations onto tape or say them mentally as you visualise them. Once you can remember the visualisations, recalling the meanings will be easy.
+ Minor Arcana
2’s.
You are in a field watching two men about to do battle with swords. You notice their strange helmets in the shape of swans. During the fighting one of the men has his sword knocked from his hand and falls to the floor. Some small coins fall from his pocket onto the ground. The other man decides to stop fighting (2 Penticles= Harmonious change) and offers the man on the floor a cup, as well as asking if they could try to get on (2 Cups= Love). The two of them go together into a small hut made of bound sticks (2 Wands= Domain) and sheath their swords (2 Swords= Peace restored).
3’s.
Inside the hut there is a large woman with very fat cheeks. One of the men takes off his ripped jacket and gives it to her. She repairs it with a needle with a penticle design at the end of it (3 Penticles= Material works). As she does this she pours herself a drink, but not paying full attention she pours too much and liquid over-spills from the rim (3 Cups= abundance). When she’s finished she heaves a large log into the fire, so large you’re surprised she can lift it at all (3 Wands= Established strenth). To get the fire going she uses one of the men’s swords to stake
it but it breaks and a piece of it falls into the fire. She realises the worth of the sword and cries in remorse (3 Swords= Sorrow).
4’s.
The men are still asleep and she decides to replace the sword before they wake to realise it’s broken. She leaves with the broken weopon and heads off over some sunny fields. Eventually she gets to a castle. She asks the guard on the gate if she may speak to the king. One goes off to ask him and shortly returns with a new sword. She asks him to send thanks to the king. She leaves and the just returned guard walks back into the castle, through the winding stone corridors to stand guarding the king behind his large ornate throne. He gets up to go to a prepared banquet on a nearby table and as he rises you see that his throne has a large golden penticle on it (4 Penticles= Earthly power). He sits and enjoys his banquet. He raises a goblet to his smiling face (4 Cups= Pleasure). They are celebrating the completion of plans for a new wing to be born on the castle. The designer brings in a model of what the finished work will look like. It is a model castle made of glued sticks, similar to a match stick model (4 Wands= Perfected work). They sit and admire it for a while until they are interupted by a traveller brought in by the guards. By the look of him he has obviously been through a long and arduous journey which hasn’t been made easy by the very large sword he is carrying. The king orders that the sword be taken from him and he be allowed to rest and join them (4 Swords= Rest from strife).
5’s.
As the party draws to a close the traveller informs the king he must be leaving, while admiring the king’s fine hat stand. The king orders the traveller be given back his sword and the hat stand as a gift. The traveller leaves with the gifts and taking his goblet to boot. The guards bid him farewell at the exit and he walks over the fields leading away from the castle. As he does so he falls over a clump of earth that has inadvert ently been dug up (5 Penticles= Earthly trouble) and wine spills from the goblet (5 Cups= Loss in pleasure). The hat stand which he had been using as a staff over the uneven ground snaps (5 Wands= Strife). An enemy of the king rides up and knows he has just left the castle so attacks him. Before the traveller has a chance to rise he is impaled on his sword (5 Swords= Defeat).
6’s
The victoriuos soldier picks up the golden goblet, steals the man’s purse and walks off chuckling to himself. After a time he comes to rest by a small pond to examine his loot. He then notices tadpoles swimming in the pond, visible by the sun’s rays. He takes off his jacket and puts it in the water, waits until a few swim over it and catches them by rapidly lifting it out of the water (6 Penticles= Material success. To celebrate his catch he uses the cup to drink some of the clear water and smiles (6 Cups= Joy). His eyes are next caught by the silver glistenings of fishes swimming at the bottom of the pond and he decides to get closer. From a nearby tree he gets a large branch and places it over the water. Using his sword to balance him he fearlessly walks to the middle (6 Wands= Victory). He plunges the sword into the water and skillfully, or luckily, catches a fish (6 Swords= Earned success).
7’s.
He comes back to the shore and takes up the piece of wood. He attatches a line and hook to its end and tries next to fish a more conventional way. He can’t see what you can; that the hook is snagged into the earth on the bottom (7 Penticles= Success unfulfilled). Soon bored, being an impatient man, he tries to scoop some fish close to the surface and looking at his water-filled cup he smiles, thinking he has caught some, but you can see that the sun is shinning on the fish in the pond and making them reflect off the sides of the cup, making him think he has caught some when he hasn’t (7 Cups= Illusionary success). When he realises his mistake he picks up the discarded branch and uses is as a punt, the end pushed into the bottom of the water, to lean right over the water, not caring for the precariousness of his position (7 Wands= Valour). And he again uses his sword half-heartedly to try and spear the fish, though by now he is getting bored (7 Swords= Unstable effort).
8’s.
After his half-hearted attempt he finally gives up, collects his belongings and leaves: but the vision stays with the pond. Time passes and seasons change and soon snow is falling and the pond freezes over. A mother and father arrive with their children and both rest nearby, allowing the children to enjoy ; which they do by making a snowman. They use coins to make the eyes, though only small ones incase they get lost (8 Coins= Prudence). The parents pour the children some refreshments and call them over, coaxing them by showing them the cups. The children see what’s being offered, abandon and kick down the snowman to come and collect the cups (8 Cups= Abandoned success). One of the children arrives first by using a wide fallen branch as a sledge/ skateboard (8 Wands= Swiftness). They sit down cross legged on the snow and without realising it the story has come full circle. Under thick snow is the hut where the fat woman used to live. One of the children feels they are sitting on something. They dig into the snow and find a broken sword, the one which broke earlier while stoking the fire (8 Swords= Shortened force).
9’s
The father pulls a pipe out of his pocket. He takes a piece of cloth from his pocket and strikes a flint to it to start the flame which he can light it from (9 Penticles= material gain) which he does. Only a small part of the cloth is burnt and he uses the rest to scoop snow into a kind of poltice which he then squeezes over a cup. The snow melts and he ends up with a cup full of water. He drinks it and enjoys it together with his pipe (9 Cups= Material Happiness). The children want to play over the pond and after being pestered he gets to make them a play “bridge” over it. He pulls up a massive log and throws it over the frozen pond, a bit like a caber-toss (8 Wands= Great strenth). He stands on it with his son to play swords. He gets slightly carried away testing the boy’s manhood. He carries on jousting with him, even though the boy begins to look afraid (8 Swords= Despair and cruelty) until his mother steps in to stop it.
10’s.
To split up the contest of wills that has now developed she gives them a bat and ball, hoping to divert them. They go over to a new spot to begin playing when the boy bends down to pick up a coin he has found in the snow, possibly dropped from the “swan” battle that took there all that time earlier. A single coin is not much in the adult world, but to a boy who’s never been in charge of any money at all he suddenly feels rich (10 Penticles= Great Wealth). Another child calls for the father to look at a large sculptured cup they have been crafting in the snow, a “snow cup”. It’s been pain-stakingly set with pebbles set all around it’s rim and middle to look like jewels (10 Cups= Perfected success). The boy who was about to play ball rushes up jelously to it to kick it down but his father grabs him. He hits him with the stick (10 Wands= Opression) but goes too far. Screaming, the mother rushes up and tries to pull him off the boy; he merely pushes her aside. In desperation she plunges a sword into his side (10 Swords= Ruin).

Well, that was all, have a nice day,

Dear Anne,
How are you? I’ve made it down to the beach and thankfully it’s much warmer. There’s a computer here but 1 minute = 2R, 8 times the cost of Delhi! However, I’ve written to the fax people to see if there’s anything they can do. I got an e-mail from M, but not from their phone. At least I have their address now, and I hope they’ll receive my e-mails.
Yours J. P.S. It’s much warmer here.

Anne, I did this one lastnight. Not too bad but nowhere near as good as the Tibetan girl. I’m waiting for my passport from immigration again today. The man was mad I go every 7 days and took me aside to ask lots of questions. Maybe I should pay 30 days next time. It would be £24 but at least I don’t have to see him for a month. O.K. Work now.
Bye J

Anne,
I drew this one too and also it didn’t go so well. A shame after the earlier successes. I think it’s harder from a photograph, but I’m pressing on.
Everything is still perfect with me. I’m on a high still. I love the work. I love the city. I love the world. Everything is working out just fine. I feel great.
Have a fine Day!

Anne, I’m sending this card as I drew it last night. I’ve done some good stuff but this particular subject didn’t go very well. I got the proportions wrong and then had trouble with hair and shading. It was still good practice though.
Well, I’ve got to get on with work so have a nice day & will write soon.
Yours.

Anne, I did this one last night. It went very well indeed. good likeness The shading’s getting more delicate. Not quite as good as the Tibetan Girl one, but very good in its own way.
I just can’t wait for you to see all these!
